The 6:40 bus never stops here anymore. Nobody's told the dogs that.
I take this road to the plant every morning, and every morning for three weeks now, they're sitting on the same bench at the old shelter stop. A gray shepherd mix and a beagle with a torn ear, both facing the road, both dead still, like they're waiting for a specific car.
First time I saw them I figured they were strays who'd found shelter from the rain. Second time, I noticed the beagle had a collar. Clean, not matted, buckle still shiny. Someone's dog. Or someone's dog used to be.
Third morning I pulled over. Told myself I'd just check the tag.
No tag. But when I crouched down to look under the bench — out of the rain, where the wood stays dry — somebody had scratched a name into the underside of the seat. Small letters, careful, like it took a while. RUSTY. And under that, a date. Eleven years ago.
I asked around at the gas station up the road. The guy behind the counter didn't even look up. Said the old man who used to run the shelter route lived two streets back, had a dog named Rusty that used to ride the bus with him into town every day, sat right up front by the driver. Guy died four winters ago. Nobody's sure who scratched the name in, or when.
I didn't say anything about the two dogs on the bench. Didn't feel like the right thing to bring up.
I started leaving food under there on my way out. Nothing fancy, just what I had — half a sandwich, dog biscuits from the gas station. It was always gone by evening. The dogs never touched it while I was watching. They'd just sit, ears up, waiting for headlights that slowed down and then didn't stop.
Last Tuesday it rained hard enough that I almost didn't see them. Shepherd had her head low, ears back, but she still had that same angle — watching the road, not me. Beagle had climbed half onto her, the way dogs do when they're cold and don't want to say so.
I don't know whose dogs they are now, or if they're anybody's. I don't know if they know the name under the bench, or if it means anything to them at all, or if I've just built a whole story around two strays who like a dry bench and a good sightline.
What I do know is I still stop there most mornings. I still leave something under the seat. And some part of me hopes that if I ever see a bus actually pull up to that stop again, both of them will finally stand.
