The Best Years of Our Lives (1946) follows three WWII veterans returning to Boone City, where they face the harsh realities of civilian life, including PTSD, strained marriages, and disability. Directed by William Wyler, the Academy Award-winning masterpiece honestly captures the emotional hurdles of the post-war veteran experience.

A former infantry sergeant and respected banker, Al returns to a loving wife (Myrna Loy) and two grown children, but struggles to reconnect with his family while battling alcoholism. He ultimately has to navigate a return to his corporate life while dealing with the guilt of having survived when so many others did not.

A decorated Air Force captain and former soda jerk who finds that his wartime heroism does not translate to the civilian job market. Returning to a loveless, materialistic marriage, he begins a forbidden romance with Al’s daughter, Peggy, which forces him to confront his ruined past and uncertain future.
