*The Stubborn Tower*

In 1173, Pisa decided to build a bell tower so beautiful that ships could spot it from the sea. The builders laid marble and carved columns, and for five years everything went up straight.

Then the ground gave way.

After the third floor, the tower leaned south like it was trying to eavesdrop on the cathedral. War broke out, money ran out, and the tower sat unfinished for a century — just a tilted stump that locals joked about.

When work started again in 1272, the new architect thought, “If we make the next floors lean the other way, maybe no one will notice.” So the tower grew with a slight curve. Still, it kept tipping. They added bells in 1372 and hoped for the best.

For 600 years it bowed lower and lower. Galileo supposedly dropped things from the top. Tourists came to gasp. In 1990 engineers finally said, “Enough,” and strapped it with steel cables like a patient in a brace.

For 11 years they played the slowest game of Jenga ever, removing soil from under the high side spoonful by spoonful. The tower straightened by 17 inches and sighed.

Now it still leans, just less. It rings its bells, sells a million photos of people “holding it up,” and refuses to fall.

It was supposed to be perfect. Instead it became famous for being flawed — and Pisa wouldn’t trade that for a straight tower anymore.
