Spicy "Koorkka-chicken curry" (Irinjalakuda style )
Recipe for Irinjalakuda style spicy Koorkka( or chinese potato)- chicken curry.
Ingredients - Serves 6
Chicken - 1 kg
Koorkka or Chinese potatoes - 1/2 Kg (cleaned thoroughly, boiled & skin removed)
For Marination :
Turmeric powder - 1 tsp
Red chilli powder - 1 tsp
Salt - 1 tsp
Garam Masala - 1 tsp
Chicken Masala (optional )
Marinate chicken & keep it at least for 1 full hour in the freezer.
By that time, please cut the below ingredients :
Onion (medium) - 3 numbers Onions (chopped).
Greenchillies - 5 - 6 nos (chopped)
Tomato (chopped) - 1 no ( Medium)
Ginger (Medium size, cut in to long thin pieces) - 1 tbsp
Garlic ( cut in to pieces) - 2 tbsp
Tomato (medium) - 2 numbers
Curry leaves (Sprig) - 2 to 3 numbers.
Keep the below powders ready for cooking:
Chilly Powder - 2 tbsps
Coriander Powder - 3 tsps
Garam Masala Powder - 2 tsp
Chicken Masala Powder - 2 tsp ( optional )
Water - 1/2 cup
Coriander leaves(sprig) - 2 number (optional - I didn't use here.)
Salt - To taste.( please remember we have already added 1 tsp while marinating.)
Coconut/Vegetable oil.
DIRECTIONS
Step 1.
Cut the chicken into medium sized pieces.Marinate the cleaned chicken pieces with the ingredients listed under marination. Keep it aside for 30 minutes to 1 hour.
Step 2.
Heat oil in a pan.
Step 3.
Add garlic, ginger & green chillies and fry until it turns golden brown in color.
Step 4.
Add sliced onions and curry leaves and stir well.
Step 5.
When it becomes light brown in color, add tomato pieces.
Step 6.
When the tomatoes become tender, add chicken pieces followed by hot water and salt and cook thoroughly in low flame for 20-25 minutes.
Step 7.
While the gravy is getting thick, add tge boiled skin removed koorkka (chinese potatoes) to it & mixed slightly for 2 more minutes & remove from the stove.
Step 10. :
Irinjalakuda style Koorkka chicken curry is ready now.
Step 11.
Serve Irinjalakuda style Koorkka chicken curry with rice , idiyappam, appam, chappathis or bread.
