Bit of a different bee job from a while back.
This colony had moved into an old tree stump. The owner needed them gone because a friend who visits is allergic to stings, so leaving them there wasn’t really an option.
First job was finding the entrance and figuring out where the colony was hiding inside the stump. After that, I carefully cut away sections of the stump to expose them while trying not to wreck the comb or upset the bees too much.
Used smoke during the job to help keep them settled.
Once I found the queen, I popped her into a queen clip and that’s when the magic happened.
The bees started following her pheromone out of the stump and toward the box. It’s pretty amazing to watch thousands of bees change direction once the queen moves.
I then left them for a few days to get used to the new hive, the relocated them to their new home at Allan’s flat apiary 🐝
Another safe relocation done better for the people and better for the bees.🐝

A few of those cold, wet days last week kept me out of the paddock and in the shed, which isn’t always a bad thing.

I’ve been spending some time putting together new hive boxes and equipment as Allans Flat Apiary continues to grow. It’s one of those jobs that takes a bit of patience, but there’s something satisfying about watching the flat packs slowly turn into hives that will eventually be home to thousands of bees.

These hives came from The Bee Store⁠, who have been great to deal with from the start. A lot of the equipment I’ve sourced for the apiary has come through them the quality has been spot on.

Taking advantage of a break in the weather to finish off mite treatment before winter kicks in.

Pest management is a huge part of beekeeping, even though it’s one of the less glamorous jobs. Healthy hives help produce healthy bees. 🐝

With Allans Flat Apiary, I want to show the real side of beekeeping not just the honey, but the work, challenges and lessons that come with it.

Just getting things set up here at Allans Flat Apiary.

I’m Jacob, a local beekeeper based in Allans Flat, Victoria. This will be where I share the journey of building the apiary from the ground up including hive work, pollination, swarm collection and eventually local honey when the hives are ready.

There’s plenty to come, but for now I’m starting small and sharing the process as it grows.
