DON’T MOVE THE PROBLEM — FIX IT.
We need to ask some serious questions about the proposed relocation of the Bairnsdale taxi rank to Service Street.
The current taxi rank has become a major problem for surrounding businesses, with ongoing loitering, antisocial behaviour, abuse and disruption. One local café in that area has already closed its doors and other shops are fed up.
Now the proposed solution is to move the rank into Service Street — an already busy street with limited parking. Right alongside a café with outdoor dining, a busy laundromat, a dentist, and many other businesses.
So what happens to them?
People aren't going to sit outside enjoying a coffee or meal with shouting, chaos and antisocial behaviour happening across the road. People wont feel safe going into the laundry mat or the dentist. Businesses shouldn't have to accept that as the price of operating in Bairnsdale.
And honestly — how many people actually use the taxi rank these days? We dont know.
If the issue is antisocial behaviour, moving the taxi rank doesn't fix it.
It just moves the problem to someone else's doorstep.
We need Council to look at the actual usage, listen to the businesses that will be affected and find a solution that addresses the problem rather than simply relocating it.
Maybe afew taxi parks at each supermarket?
Ourselves and other businesses in the area are putting a petition together for people to object to moving the taxi rank to service street. If you'd like to sign please visit one of our stores.
Support local businesses.
Don't move the problem. FIX IT.
