The bees around here work the banksia and spotted gum you’ll walk past on the way to the billabong, then the wildflowers on the property, then the paddocks down the road and beyond.

We encourage all our guests to buy local produce where possible and there’s none better than honey from the Shoalhaven and Eurobodalla.

You’ll hear him before you see him. A whipbird, then a kookaburra, then something that sounds suspiciously like a car alarm. All of it coming from one bird, standing on a mound of scratched earth somewhere in the understorey.

Winter is lyrebird season on the South Coast. The males are displaying, tail feathers arched over their heads, running through every sound they’ve ever collected. Most people go their whole lives without catching one mid-performance.

At Mimosa, the bush does the work for you. Twenty five acres of it, four cottages tucked far enough apart that the only soundtrack is birdlife, frogs at dusk and the odd owl after dark. Sit still on the verandah with a coffee for long enough and the property introduces itself.

Then it’s a short drive to Murramarang and the Brooman forest tracks if you want to go looking.
