Brussel sprouts 2026 are underway. 🌱🌱🌱

In 2025 we went zero input, this year we are changing to ā€˜minimal’ input. We are still using syntropic principles, but given cost of labour, finite space, capital investment in the logistics & sales side of the business and market demands, this year by adding a little extra fertility we hope to get a higher yield from approx 3/4 of the bed space. We still maintain quality when striving for higher yield, and we can also improve our yield by reducing the amount of seconds.

The main addition is well composted wood chips which serve as our on-farm low-effort composting system. We also used a bag of organic chicken manure fertiliser ($25 worth) per row.

The diversity provided by the agroforestry, the improved soil condition and huge amounts of liquid carbon released by the times cutting of the grasses in the interrows will provide fertility for the crop as it grows, now it just has a little boost before it starts.

Looking forward to another season of regenerating the soil through the process of farming it, all the while providing nutritious local and organic food to the community.

What is Misty Creek Agroforestry?

A beautiful agriculture that is ecologically, economically and socially sound. The defining feature of Misty Creek is how we integrate animals with agroforestry and vegetable production. The food our system produces is optimal for human health while regenerating the land its on, and its surrounding community.Ā Everything is 100% certified organic.

Our agroecology is built around our ā€˜Tree Range’ chickens, so named as they are truly free range through our agroforestry. It is based on a day-range ā€˜pasture-raised’ model, however with the key difference that they are consciously and systematically employed by us in order to grow an agro-forest. By moving our chickens between our rows of trees, the chickens can enjoy an environment most like their ancestral home of forest verges, while our agroforestry system has little need for any fertilisers, chemicals or any other external input.Ā

Beyond chicken and eggs, our other key products are beef and brussel sprouts. Our cattle are managed under principles of ultra high density grazing and as such have no need for chemical or pharmaceutical inputs. The Brussel sprouts thrive on the fertility from the animals and soil building from the trees.

You can find our stall stocking our produce at the following farmers markets each week

Friday Mullumbimby
Saturday Bangalow

Thanks to our community support we can keep doing what we do šŸ™

WE ARE HIRING

Misty Creek is a small scale agroecological farm that is exploring new ways of integrating animals with agroforestry and annual cropping. We strive to create an abundant, natural system that grows the highest quality produce with the minimum of external inputs. The farm is certified organic & regenerative. Our methods draw inspiration from permaculture, syntropic agriculture and total grazing. Integrated operations on the farm include growing ā€˜Tree Range’ chicken for meat, egg laying chickens, beef & dairy cattle, agroforestry and annual & perennial cropping. The chicken & eggs are sold at the Byron, Mullumbimby & Bangalow farmers markets, alongside other produce.

We are looking for a farm hand for a broad variety of responsibilities, which is one of the perks of working on a mixed farm that sells direct to the consumer. Poultry work includes feeding, watering and moving chickens, as well as collecting and packing eggs. Cattle work focuses on daily moves, setting up portable fencing, maintaining fences and water systems. There are also tasks such as packing meat, organising orders, cleaning and maintenance, and for the right candidate, running the farmers market stall.

The role is full time, 4 to 5 days per week. Our business is expanding so there is the potential to grow into a more autonomous permanent role for the right candidate. On site accommodation available.

The right candidate will have/be:
- Demonstrable ability in setting up temporary electric fencing and repairing permanent fences
- Comfortable working with cattle and familiar with low stress livestock handling
- Competent and safe driver of utes and tractors
- Fast and efficient worker
- Attention to detail and takes pride in their work
- Passion for organic and regenerative agriculture
- Physical fitness

That’s a wrap for the Misty Brussel sprouts 2025 crop! Thanks to everyone who came to the Byron, Mullum and Bangalow farmers markets weekly and scooped them all up.

Contained in these sweet green nuggets is the biology of our chickens, cows and agroforestry all wrapped in one sweet parcel.

We produced 600kg of brussel sprouts throughout the season. It goes to show syntropic methods can be productive and profitable when done well.

Now we will let the cows finish off the plants, and these beds will produce beef, eggs and milk during the summer, before Brussel sprouts again in 2026.

In the coming days we’ll show the next steps in our management.

Last but not least, big thanks to for the management and harvesting of this crop.

Misty Creek beef is available now! Its been over 2 years in the making to bring our organic Nguni cross beef to market.

Farmed with the same principles and values as our chicken, eggs and Brussel sprouts that you all love.

The cattle are certified organic, which means no vaccines, no drenches, no pharmaceuticals. By maintaining optimal soil and animal health, and choosing a resilient breed such as Nguni, we have no need for these nasty chemicals.

Come see us at the market for the full range of steaks, mince, roasts, slow cook cuts and some delicious sausages with no additives except organic herbs and spices.

A walk through of our newer silvopasture plantings that have hit the nail on the head in terms of effectiveness and efficiency.

Effectiveness - quick shade and forage options for little cost.

Efficiency - minimal management since planting, a couple rounds of pruning.

We may not have been busy on social media lately, but away from the spotlight we’ve been working extra hard.

We have new products coming to market soon (beef) and long term projects like kiwi fruit gaining momentum.

Stay tuned to learn more about integrating organic animal husbandry with agroforestry.

3 new pure bred Nguni calves have been born at Misty recently, with a few more on the way.

The bull calf in photo 3 is looking particularly promising as a small but heavy bull with masculine traits.

The red Nguni cow is the mother of this bull calf. She has some temperament issues, but this is improving with multiple times a day contact and moving. To counter this she is raising an exceptional calf while being as fat as mud.

By the end of this growing season we will be selling Nguni crossbred calves

Our market customers might have noticed some variation in the colour of our egg yolks recently, some dark like usual, some paler. 🄚

The colour of the yolk should reflect the amount of green forage a chicken has. August is our slowest time of pasture growth, so the chickens don’t have the same quantity of pasture to forage on right now. They are still rotated twice weekly through our agroforestry, fed a certified organic feed mix and drink unchlorinated rain water. As it warms up this variability will be no more as the pasture grows in earnest.

Unfortunately, all conventional chemical grown chicken feed contains a colourant to make the yolks orange, no matter the diet or condition of the chickens.

Our organic mix doesn’t, showing the true seasonality behind egg production. šŸ³

The most eagerly anticipated crop of the year is here! Misty Creek brussel sprouts.

Nurtured by cows, chickens, agroforestry and grasses. These brassica nuggets have grown naturally and as nutrient dense as they come. Not only does this crop nourish the community, but through the process of growing it we are regenerating our farm ecosystem.
