Brussel sprouts 2026 are underway. š±š±š±
In 2025 we went zero input, this year we are changing to āminimalā input. We are still using syntropic principles, but given cost of labour, finite space, capital investment in the logistics & sales side of the business and market demands, this year by adding a little extra fertility we hope to get a higher yield from approx 3/4 of the bed space. We still maintain quality when striving for higher yield, and we can also improve our yield by reducing the amount of seconds.
The main addition is well composted wood chips which serve as our on-farm low-effort composting system. We also used a bag of organic chicken manure fertiliser ($25 worth) per row.
The diversity provided by the agroforestry, the improved soil condition and huge amounts of liquid carbon released by the times cutting of the grasses in the interrows will provide fertility for the crop as it grows, now it just has a little boost before it starts.
Looking forward to another season of regenerating the soil through the process of farming it, all the while providing nutritious local and organic food to the community.
