Melbourne for an extra-long weekend, and apparently I’ve arrived just as the city has been taken over by American NFL fans.
After landing on Thursday, I remembered reading about Ho Liao, the newest branch of the Ho Jiak family, tucked away in Rainbow Alley — and rather conveniently, right next to my first coffee catch-up and a delivery of [the real] Mr Wong preserves. Some things are simply meant to be.
A very late lunch it was. Wait staff in Chinese brocade jackets, the Crazy Rich Asians soundtrack playing in the background… oh yes, this looked promising.
Straight to the “untraditional” char kway teow for me. No cockles, admittedly, but glossy smoky noodles, lup cheong and those wicked little nuggets of crispy pork lard more than made amends. Rich, savoury, gloriously indulgent — and absolutely no regrets. I’ll be back. 🥢❤️
