Make friends with roti (canai) at Roti Buddy in Market Square Sunnybank - the shop/brand is new but it’s by the people behind so naturally we tried one each of the roti and bao bun options:
* roti canai (plain roti) with three sides of the day & papadums, $15.50 - served on banana leaf
* mini hand rolled bao with mummy’s sweet pork belly, $16 - 3 slider baos, served with choice of protein, fresh lettuce, carrots, coriander & sauces
Flavours were good on both dishes, and it was fun to be able to see the roti being freshly flipped and lovingly fluffed up for plating. I’m more accustomed to having roti just with curry sauce or chicken, so eating it with vegetables felt like a fresh twist. I would’ve liked a bit more curry, and wifey thought it was too hot/spicy for kids, though neither she nor our kid are particularly able to handle heat. In any case when she fed that back to the boss, she surprised us a few minutes later with a complimentary cooking drink for our son along with an iced tea she had offered to wifey.
I found the bao buns to be nicely cooked, with just enough softness and fluffiness but still held together well when wrapped around other food. Pork belly is an iconic ingredient for these “gua bao” and this version went down quite well. Didn’t see any carrots or sauces as mentioned in the menu, though the pork dish itself had plenty of sauce already.
The whole shop feels quite open and spacious, carrying a bit of a tropical feel with its use of bright colours and splashes of greenery. I’m keen to check out their curries and deep fried chicken next time - any buddy keen to join? 😉

Lobster fried rice cake, first time we try something like this and it’s quite delicious! Not so hidden low-key menu available at YX Mini Hotpot next to the Market Square Sunnybank. Thank you my dear friend for the deluxe feast, so satisfying.
