This morning on my walk I came across masses of fruit on the ground most likely the detritus of fruit bats and possums feasting.

The cluster fig (Ficus racemosa) is a traditional bush food and medicinal plant heavily utilised by First Nations groups across northern Australia so I never expected to see one in south east Queensland. It doesn't stand in the clear, hidden amongst the weeping lilli pilli and parasol leaf trees that line the wetlands.

But what a wonderful discovery - you can read more about this native at

NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines’ and Islanders’ Day Observance Committee. One of the most important and celebrated events is celebrated throughout the first week of July.

This year, NAIDOC week’s theme recognises the unwavering strength and spirit of First Nations people, represented through the symbolic fire – which also embodies the connection that First Nations people have to Country, community and their cultures and traditions.

It invites all Australians to listen, learn and engage in meaningful dialogue, fostering a society where the wisdom and contributions of First Nations people are fully valued and respected.

It’s our busiest time of the year. The event can be celebrated between July and September however most choose the week dedicated to it.

This year NAIDOC Week celebrations will be held from 5 – 12 July 2026 marking 50 years of championing and celebrating Aboriginal culture.

How will you celebrate?

Right now there's an unique Aussie animal that needs our help.
The Greater Bilby (Macrotis lagotis) , as opposed to the Lesser Bilby which is now extinct, is used in Australia as an Easter symbol to promote conservation, shifting focus away from introduced, environmentally damaging rabbits.

We need to increase the numbers of The Greater Bilby. Can you help?

Save The Bilby Fund is a small Australian charity. We aim to build our community to reach around 400 free-living bilbies behind the fence.
