Another cracking day on the farm today.

So many big achievements wrapped up in small moments.

Thanks to my Community Volunteers Craig and Michael who spends their Saturdays supporting kids just like their own.

We would have been lost without you today between Hay Stacking , lead walkers and fire managers

I wanted to acknowledge and thank one of the hardest working members of our team - Deb Cook.

Deb is an Individual Disability Support Worker and an Allied Health Therapy Assistant.

With Deb here at the By and By Farm, families can book their OT, Speech Pathologists, Physiotherapists etc to see their children here while they are most relaxed and comfortable.

Deb can work hand in hand with them to then implement/execute their Therapeutic Plan each time your children visit us here at the Farm.

So that struggle for time to manage Specialist Appointments or even to have their children respond in an “indoor” environment can be overcome.

We are all about creative and meaningful support where our participants can thrive and grow in their life beyond the saddle.

Happy to share some of our success stories if this sounds like something of interest to your family and can provide references from Specialists we currently see on farm.

Some wonderful participant feedback - we really do love what we share with our families

Good morning Nic

I've been trying to put into words the emotion from the boy's experience yesterday. I'll start by saying that as soon as we drove in, you smiled & waved and made us feel welcome!

Both Hamish & Reilley were out the car & off..no reluctance, no anxiety, no second thoughts, just full of excitement! It is clear to see that you, Deb & Kim have such a gentle & nurturing approach working together as a beautiful team! Each & every child could just be themselves, no pressure or expectation!

This opportunity you have provided to the Jones brothers is one we've been on the search for years! We've tried everything.. PCYC, scouts, library groups just to mention a few. When we talked on the way home & last night, both said that they loved it because everyone is so nice and the animals are great..& the chooks & the cats & Red & Charlie!

Their response when asked would you like to make this a regular activity each Friday 'definitely', 'yes please' 'can we'!! Together with beautiful words to thank Tom & I for taking them. We know your team extends to include Craig & Adelaide too. They are fabulous how they back you guys up & compliment your team! So as you can see, please book us in as regulars. Thank you so, so much & sorry for the essay but how do you put into just a few words such a positive experience. Have a fantastic weekend & we'll see you next week🌻

Today the team came together to celebrate the birthday of our gorgeous friend Zara.

Our 9 year old pocket rocket that keep life very interesting.

Zara and I met over a year ago now. We meet together to spend time with Taffy and generally get up to mischief (including swimming in muddy puddles).

While we are still working with Zara’s incredible family on her NDIS Goals including speech and language, I was thrilled to hear that my little bestie said “Nic” for the first time. That will do me thanks xx

Happy Birthday Beautiful Human

Saturday Mornings are very special.

I spend time with 4 gorgeous and kind Non Verbal Kiddos who are all animal mad!

These creative, funny and active children have an amazing ability to communicate with the horse and I - special twist is that the children are forming a friendship group which now includes play dates and birthday parties.

Makes the cold mornings so worth it xx

Not everyone is keen to ride when the visit the farm.

For some participants, it’s about the time spent with the animals and completing simple tasks to care for and support them.

Either way our Tullie Pup is a willing friend

Children have a beautiful way of keeping things real and reminding me almost daily why I chose to be here with the team.

We return to the space in Term 3 and the pace is frantic.

Managing the energy, animals and my own full family life including study can be overwhelming.

Last night my very energetic group of young boys settled in around the fire. I love this time of the day.

Some are “sword fighting”.

Some are fort building.

Some are roasting marshmallows.

One Mr 9 snuggled up on my lap for reassurance. It was his first time. It was getting dark . He was getting cold and missing his Own Mumma.

We start talking about my day tomorrow and asking if he can come again. I apologized saying I was studying tomorrow.

Mr 9 pipes up and said (and I quote while still snuggled on my lap) “but why would you want study when you have a dream job? What will happen when you finish and you won’t do this job anymore? I would miss you”

Cop that in the feels!

I was able to explain that I will always be here.

Maybe it’s just my title, the location or some of the faces that might change but to offer this experience isn’t set to change at The By and By Farm

As Term 2 comes to an end, I am reflecting on the fun, laughs and learning we have all achieved together.

Some great connections between horses and humans have been achieved.

We are welcoming many families back into the space for Term 3 but have space available for 4 to 6 people on Monday and Friday

Looking to also form a Teenage Boy Group. PM if interested.

I am also looking at Monday and Friday Home Schoolers Group from 10am to 12pm.

Have a great break Families and I can’t wait to share your joy again from July 2022

The best horses in Heaven
they have no tail.
This is a rule they all know
without fail.
For when a new horse arrives
with a short cut bob,
they all know that this horse
did a very good job.

His owner could not bear
to part with her friend
so she saved his tail,
wrapped in ribbons
and in braids,
to hold with his memory
in a very loving way.

To enter Heaven
without a tail
is an honor,
a message,
that without fail
announces to everyone,
far and wide
that this horse
was more than a wonderful ride.

But this horse was loved and cherished by one
and when his time serving on this Earth was done
he left behind a broken heart and a soul
from which he never will part.

I know I am always bragging about how much I love my work BUT it really doesn’t get much better than this week.

We have had some amazing experiences.

A young ASD rider who hates creative writing smashed his NAPLAN test with a heart felt story about his time at the farm and his relationship with Charlie.

Many firsts including words spoken by a Non Verbal Participant. She said Cat as she lovingly spent time with our precious kittens. Her grandparents were there to cherish that sound

Hands free riding from a rider who could not climb on in the past.

We have had fire pits, marshmallows and pony chasings.

My favorite part is the friendship.

Watching the children grow and encourage each other. To laugh together. To compromise. To create

To simply be themselves.

And I get to watch that. So yeah I am very 🍀

The Worst Mistaken Belief About Horses Held by Nervous Riders

Ready for it….

That horses can put up with your fears and insecurities…

Let me explain…

You cannot hang on to your fears and insecurities and expect the horse to change itself. To put up with your fears and insecurities the horse must shut down to physical discomfort and become emotionally disengaged. Basically, a robotic zombie.

Fearful, insecure riders become reactive, tense, hanging tightly onto reins or snatching at them. They become hypervigilant, focus on potential threat or danger, and perceive their horse in a negative light when they are triggered to feel unsafe.

Besides the horse experiencing unrelenting pressure or physical pain, they are absorbers of emotions from their environments. Therefore, fearful riders trigger fear within horses. Depending on the horse this might take seconds, other horses might be more resilient and take a few rides before there tolerance to the discomfort and emotions collapses.

Therefore, a horse cannot remain obedient, relaxed and blaze to the world and let you enjoy your trail ride if you are feeling unsafe. It does not work like that – horses don’t work like that….
But here is the good thing. Whilst they cannot put up with your fears and insecurities the way they “mirror” back your emotions and insecurities at you is why horses are so powerful in equine assisted psychotherapy.

Therefore, horses cannot put up with your fears and insecurities…but they can inspire you to dig deep into the cause, address them and be that mirror that shows the positive change within yourself.
But sadly, because of this mistaken belief they get labelled as “bad”, “difficult” or “problem” horses. Typically, this problem emerges not long after the purchase of the horse and in many cases the previous owners get accused of “drugging” the horse or misrepresenting the horse as being suitable. The truth is, no horse is suitable fearful rider, because fear triggers fear.

This illustration depicts what I call the vicious cycle of horse and rider fear and I write about this in my book Confidence & Trust – Solving the Horse + Rider Equation. This book digs deep into the causes of emotions and insecurities in the saddle and details a process of building confidence and trust with your horse.

If you liked this article please hit LIKE and SHARE, because this mistaken belief causes a lot of disappointment in the lives of people and causes horses to be misjudge, misunderstood and many times – mistreated as their “bad” horse labelled can put their life in jeopardy.

I am determined to teach my pupils not just how to ride but how to feel and care for their horse.

A great example to live by - Olympic Legend Isabel Werth prepping her horse's stable.

Proves we are never too good or too important to put the horse's need at the centre of your journey
