Paperbark Tree Wonders 🤯

Nature's best toilet paper, the Paperbark Tree is an important provider to survival in Far North Queensland.

This is a tree that provides! Medicine, practical solutions, shelter, an awesome fire starter, insect repellent, toilet paper, nature's band aid 😳📝

It's Tamarind Time 🎉

This is easily one of the most rewarding times of the year. Tamarind time!! I was lucky enough to grab the very first fruits falling off the tree today. Surely that's got to be a lucky omen 🤔

Far North Queensland's essential seasonal superfood is back. If I miss out on these, I swear I get sick before December 😭

Unfortunately, I only got to eat one this morning on my way home with Walu 🤣 An Elder asked what I was nibbling on, so I showed him and asked if he knew what they were. Next thing I know, he grabs the bag, says thank you, and walks off 🤣

You've always got to respect our Elders, so I just had a good laugh and will head back to the tree this afternoon for more!

I'll be hosting regular afternoon meetups at the tamarind trees for a feast, so keep an eye on the page events. As you probably already know, September is a busy month in Cairns.

Rainforest Delights 🤗

Check out some of the natural wonders we found while enjoying the sun and trying to build our strength and heat tolerance back up.

Leaching Black Bean Nuts in the rainforest 🧺🌿

Following on from our recent videos, this batch of Black Bean Nuts (Moreton Bay Chestnut) is officially undergoing traditional creek leaching.

This time, I’ve layered native ginger flowers and blue quandong on top for an extra medicinal boost.

Along the way, we dive into reading water flow, managing the micro-variables of traditional nut processing, and most importantly, why you should never touch someone's nuts in the creek 👺💪🤬

Black Bean Nut Ready 🧺

I've still got a decent stash of Black Bean Nuts stored away, so each fortnight I'm out finding a new place for leaching.

I tested out the new bag in the creek over the weekend, and it's doing a fantastic job! 🙏

In this video, you can see how I've lined the leaching bag with two types of native ginger leaves. This not only introduces beneficial microflora, but it also helps keep the nuts clean from dirt, sand, sticks, and other river debris.

Tomorrow I'll post the video of putting the bag out for leaching, followed by the final reveal once I bring them home.

⚠️ Please note: These nuts are highly toxic if not safely processed using traditional methods, including thorough leaching!

Red Bean Tree 🔴 (Adenanthera pavonina)

This is one of my favourite bush tucker foods. Like most bush tucker from Far North Queensland though, its very toxic if not safely processed first!

Walu and I continued or exploration of the Forest Gardens walk and I made him stop here for a while so I could get a decent stash.

Native Qld Ginger 🫚

We've been featuring the natural beauty of Forest Gardens over the past few days. Continuing on our Forest Gardens walk, Walu and I found ourselves a decent stash of Alpinia caerulea.

So far on this short morning walk we've gathered Mangrove Ferns tips, a few Johnstone River Almonds, some Ginger berries, and some leaves for leaf wrapping.

Foraging clips from Forest Gardens 📹

Walu and I left the duck pond at Forest Gardens and took off following the creek line to see what we could find 🔍

Here's a few clips with my Mangrove Ferns, Johnstone River Almonds, and what I suspect was a Sandpaper Fig found along the way.

The Mangrove Fern 🌿

This species (Acrostichum speciosum) is one of my favourites. I always grab a few tips when I can, sometimes I'll even nibble on it raw as I'm on the go. Just make sure it's not in an area contaminated by heavy metals or pollution!

The Mangrove Fern is a powerful plant, highly nutritious, and a traditional source of medicinal leafy greens (historically used for things like treating snakebites). You can find it around the swamps, creeks, and fringes of the mangroves in coastal areas.
