It was great to visit Franz Smallgoods in Caloundra recently and catch up with Ian and Bernard to hear firsthand about the opportunities and challenges facing local manufacturing and small business.

Since 1985, Franz Smallgoods has been producing quality German-style smallgoods right here on the Sunshine Coast, with the entire production process completed locally. Today, the business employs around 17 local people and sources around 95% of its ingredients from Australian suppliers.

Like many small businesses, Ian spoke about the pressures of rising interest rates, increasing freight and fuel costs, higher rents and ongoing uncertainty about the future. While costs continue to climb, businesses often can't pass those increases on to customers and are forced to absorb the hit themselves.

Small businesses and manufacturers like Franz Smallgoods are the backbone of our local economy. They create local jobs, support other local businesses and keep money circulating in our community.

Thank you to Ian and the team for showing me around and sharing your story. I’ll continue fighting for policies that back local businesses, reduce cost pressures and help Sunshine Coast manufacturers grow and succeed.
