When using the deep litter method to keep goats warm through the winter - air flow and ventilation are critical to maintain respiratory health - we prefer our shelters drafty to stuffy. Neutralizing ammonia is also critical.

It's interesting how people can have such different opinions on something as simple as how to handle bedding in sheds. Here is one method we have used in the past:

COLD CLIMATE WINTER PREP

We've not yet bedded the shelters - that happens when we dip into the teens - usually October - but this year we have had a long warmish spell. It is not far off! Why wait? Because it will get a lot colder here. The goats are still warm with their thick coats of cashmere and food furnaces. Providing too much too soon can interrupt their acclimation for the really cold weather. We use deep litter for our extreme temperatures that will drop well below zero.
