๐ŸŒฟ GUMBI GUMBI โ€“ AUSTRALIA'S INCREDIBLE HEALING PLANT ๐ŸŒฟ

Thank you to all of the people messaging asking more about Gumbi Gumbi, I thought i would put together a post to help explain ๐ŸŒฟ

For generations, Gumbi Gumbi has been valued by Aboriginal communities for its traditional medicinal uses, and today researchers are continuing to explore the remarkable properties of this native Australian plant.

โœจ Why is Gumbi Gumbi so highly regarded?

๐Ÿƒ Rich in antioxidants โ€“ Gumbi Gumbi contains naturally occurring compounds such as flavonoids, tannins and saponins that may help protect the body from oxidative stress and support overall wellbeing.

๐Ÿ’š Supports immune health โ€“ Traditionally used to help strengthen the body's natural defences and promote general wellness.

๐ŸŒฑ Anti-inflammatory properties โ€“ Gumbi Gumbi has long been used to help support people experiencing inflammation, joint discomfort and other inflammatory conditions.

๐Ÿ”ฌ Ongoing cancer research โ€“ Studies are investigating compounds found in Gumbi Gumbi for their potential effects on cancer cells. While research is continuing, it remains an area of growing scientific interest.

๐ŸŒพ Digestive support โ€“ Traditionally used to help soothe digestive discomfort and support healthy digestive function.

๐ŸŒธ Skin health โ€“ Gumbi Gumbi has also been used to support skin wellbeing and may help soothe irritated or inflamed skin.

For thousands of years, Aboriginal people have used Gumbi Gumbi as part of traditional knowledge systems to support health and wellbeing. Modern science is now beginning to explore and validate some of these traditional uses.

โš ๏ธ While Gumbi Gumbi has a long history of traditional use, it should not be considered a replacement for professional medical advice or treatment. Always consult a qualified healthcare professional before using herbal medicines, particularly if you have a medical condition or are taking medication.

Do you want to try Gumbi Gumbi? I'll put a link in the comments to this incredible Australian native plant! ๐ŸŒฟ

The SBS article featuring Gomeroi woman Kerrie Saunders shines a light on something many Australians have never been taught โ€” that native grains and bread making traditions have sustained First Nations people for thousands of years.

As Kerrie shares:

"These native grains, theyโ€™ve been eaten by my old people for thousands of years."

And perhaps one of the most powerful reminders in the article is:

"These grains represent our identity, who we are, where weโ€™re from... The grasses are here, and the knowledge is still here too. They're all just waiting to be listened to."

The story explores guli (native millet), one of the grains used to make bread for the world's oldest continuous culture. It highlights the cultural knowledge, environmental benefits, and incredible resilience of native grasses that have survived Australia's droughts and floods for countless generations.

I also loved hearing Kerrie explain:

"You donโ€™t have to use 100 per cent native grain flour. Even five or 10 per cent can add goodness back into wheat flour."

This isn't just a story about food. It's a story about Country, culture, identity, sustainability, and the revival of knowledge that has always belonged here.

The photographs I've shared in this post are from the SBS article and help tell this important story.

Please take a few minutes to read the article, then SHARE this post so more people can learn about native grains, Indigenous food systems, and the incredible work Kerrie Saunders is doing on Gomeroi Country.

The more people who hear these stories, the stronger they become. โค๏ธ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿ’›

๐Ÿ’ฌ๐ŸŒฟ One of the BEST things about hosting a NAIDOC morning tea? The conversations that happen around the table ๐Ÿ’›โœจ

Bushfoods naturally get people asking questions ๐Ÿ‘

โœจ โ€œWhat does lemon myrtle taste like?โ€
โœจ โ€œHow long have Aboriginal people used native foods?โ€
โœจ โ€œWhatโ€™s wattleseed?โ€
โœจ โ€œHow do you cook with this?โ€

And THATโ€™S where connection begins ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿƒ

Food is such a powerful and approachable way to learn more about culture ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿ”ฅ
