🌱 The first asparagus of the season has arrived!

Certified organic asparagus is coming down from Carnarvon, and it’s looking beautiful.

Carnarvon is an oasis in the Gascoyne a warm, fertile growing region where the climate allows all sorts of crops to thrive while much of southern WA is still in winter or early spring.

Asparagus is one of those vegetables that really makes you pay attention to the calendar. Its season is short, and spring has officially sprung. We’re expecting it to be around for just 3–4 weeks, so when that first harvest arrives, we like to make the most of it.

Asparagus is wonderfully simple to cook. Roast it, grill it, steam it or throw it on the BBQ. Keep it simple and let that fresh flavour do the work.

For us, this is one of the things that makes buying organic food so interesting. The harvest arrives when it’s ready, we enjoy it while it’s here, and then we wait for the next season with excitement.

The first Carnarvon asparagus is here now. 🌱

🍅 There are tomatoes everywhere this week, and we’re not complaining!

Our certified organic round and cherry tomatoes are in abundance, looking fantastic and, even better, at a very affordable price.

With winter giving us a few warmer days, it might just be time to put the salad back on the table. 🥗 Or perhaps fire up the BBQ this weekend and make the most of these beautiful tomatoes while they’re plentiful.

Sometimes a particular crop arrives in abundance, and we get to enjoy plenty of it while it lasts. 🌱

Drop into the store and grab some, or add them to your weekly Organic delivery.

🚚💚 One by one, the van begins to fill.

Each box has been packed by hand, thoughtfully prepared for the household it’s heading to.

Some are for busy families. Some for couples. Some for people who simply love having fresh, certified organic produce delivered to their door each week.

No two boxes are exactly the same because no two households are the same. And with seasonal produce changing in rhythm with nature, every delivery tells its own story.

It’s all part of our daily rhythm… carefully loading each box, checking every delivery, and setting off across Perth to connect good food with the people who enjoy it.

One van. One route. Hundreds of meals shared around tables across our community.

That’s been our rhythm for over 26 years, and it’s one we’re proud to continue.

Organic Potatoes

🥔 It has been a fantastic year for certified organic potatoes.

We are enjoying a beautiful harvest with some wonderful varieties available right now -Rodeo, Kipfler, Maranca, Mondial and Royal Blue.

What makes this season even more exciting is seeing a few new organic growers turn their hand to organic potato growing, with fantastic results. Growing potatoes organically takes care, patience and plenty of attention to the season, so it is always special to see new growers bring a successful harvest to our community.

Every year tells a slightly different story. Some seasons challenge growers, and some seasons are worth celebrating. This year has certainly been a good local organic potato harvest 🌱

🥔 Potato tip of the week:
At this time of year, keep your organic potatoes in the fridge.

Potatoes are actually a living seed, and when conditions are right, they naturally want to sprout. Unlike conventional potatoes, organic potatoes are not treated with anti-sprouting inhibitors. The soil left on their skin also helps protect their freshness, so a little extra care at home can help keep them fresher for longer.

Whether you are roasting, mashing, baking or making a cosy winter meal, a beautiful variety is waiting to find its way into your kitchen.

🎨💚 Over the past couple of weeks, our little colouring competition has filled the shop with something pretty special.

We’ve had the privilage of sharing so many lovely moments with families popping into the shop... chatting with little artists at the counter, hearing the stories behind their colourful creations, and seeing the excitement on their faces as they proudly handed them in.

Our shop window has become a celebration of creativity, and it’s been such a joy to watch it come to life.

If your masterpiece is still sitting on the kitchen table, there’s still time!

Bring it into the shop today or tomorrow before we begin looking through all of the wonderful entries.

🍊 Goodbye Imperials, hello Daisy mandarins!

As our certified organic local Imperial mandarins begin to wind down, we are welcoming another seasonal favourite… Daisy mandarins.

This is one of the things we love about organic food. The season keeps moving, bringing different varieties, flavours and little surprises along the way.

Daisys are deliciously sweet, juicy and wonderfully easy to peel - perfect for lunchboxes, busy mornings or those moments when you need a quick snack without sticky fingers.

A little heads-up though… Daisys do have seeds. 🍊

So please don’t spit the pips on the floor, flick them at your siblings 😉.

We are grateful to share another part of the organic mandarin season with Perth households.

Each harvest has its own moment, and that is what makes seasonal eating so enjoyable.

Look out for certified organic Daisy mandarins in the shop or add some to your next delivery while they are here. 🌱

For many years, every home delivery at The Organic Collective was packed into clean, sturdy boxes we’d collected from our growers and suppliers.

We’d spend hours searching high and low for the right ones because if a perfectly good box could be used again, we thought it should be. Long before terms like circular economy became popular, it was simply the way we did things.

As our community grew, so did the challenge. Finding enough quality recycled boxes became harder, and eventually we needed to introduce purchased boxes to keep up.

But one thing has never changed.

Our belief in reduce, reuse and recycle is still as strong today as it was over 26 years ago.

That’s why we ask if you could please leave your Seasonal Box out for our driver to collect with your next delivery.

Every clean, dry box returned helps us:

🌱 Reduce waste by giving good boxes a longer life.

🚚 Reduce the resources needed to keep replacing them.

🥕 Protect your fruit and vegetables with sturdy boxes that are just the right size for the seasonal box you choose.

💚 Keep the cost of our delivery service as low as we can in a time when the price of almost everything continues to rise.

Some of the boxes we deliver in do cost several dollars each to purchase. When a box is returned in great condition and used again, that cost is shared across multiple deliveries instead of just one. It’s a small action that makes a real difference.

Looking after these boxes has always been a team effort between our growers, our team, our delivery drivers and our customers.

So next time you’ve unpacked your fruit and vegetables, if you’re expecting another delivery, simply, keep the box somewhere clean and dry, and leave it out for your driver.

It’s one small way we can all work together to reduce waste, use resources wisely, and continue delivering good organic food to homes across Perth.
