In May this year, Tasmania will introduce a Container Deposit Scheme. We’ve seen lots or responses indicating interest in receiving a 10 cent return on containers deposited with the scheme.

What’s seems to be missing in the conversation is that this scheme will be the most expensive in Australia. That 10c refund will be as a result of a charge on manufacturers of 19.5 cents (per aluminium can) with GST on top of that. That is, less than half of the increased cost is returned to consumers - and that’s only if wholesalers and retailers don’t add a margin (which they’re quite entitled to do) on top of the cost manufacturers must pass through.

So why is this scheme so expensive? The owners of the scheme (Coke (Europe), Asahi (Japan) and Lion (Japan)) say it’s because they have to transport the materials not just to the mainland but overseas to be recycled.

It’s not easy being a manufacturer in Tasmania. When you see the price of locally made goods increase in May, please don’t turn away. We really appreciate your support - and hope that you’ll continue to support Tasmanian producers.
