🌟 DONOR COW FEATURE – ARKLE ROYAL LASS R31 🌟

At Gumnut Downs Angus, we believe great cow families are the foundation of every successful breeding program, and few females have had a greater impact on our herd than Arkle Royal Lass R31.

To date, R31 has produced 15 registered progeny within the Gumnut Downs program. Her influence continues to grow with each generation.

One characteristic R31 consistently passes on to her progeny is exceptional fertility, particularly through her daughters. They have repeatedly demonstrated their ability to conceive in the first round of AI, a trait we place tremendous value on within our breeding program. We have earmarked one of her daughters, Gumnut Downs Roxy V23, as a future donor female, and she now resides in our donor pen alongside her mother. Further highlighting the strength of this cow family, V23 produced seven IVF embryos from her first collection, we look forward to further flushing her in the near future.

Beyond her production record, R31 stands on exceptional feet, possesses a highly desirable teat and udder structure, carries depth and capacity from front to back and is an exemplary mother to her calves.

One of the most rewarding aspects of owning R31 is hearing the feedback from visitors to Gumnut Downs Angus. It is a common observation from people touring the property that she is one of the standout cows in the herd. Many visitors are quick to identify both R31 and her progeny in the paddock, often commenting on their quality, femininity, structural correctness, and overall presence.

Females like R31 are the reason we place such emphasis on maternal strength within our breeding program. Her combination of fertility, structural integrity, maternal excellence, and proven production record ensures she will have a major influence on the future development of our female herd for years to come.

First day on the job for Coonamble Goalkeeper T628, out with his contemporary group of recipient cows as our clean-up sire. His role is to pick up any cows that may have slipped their pregnancy following our embryo transfer program, so fingers crossed he doesn’t have too much work to do.

On Friday, we implanted some very exciting embryos, raising the bar on the genetics we have utilised within the Gumnut Downs program to date.

This year, we made several adjustments to the nutritional program implemented across our recipient cows. While there was an element of risk in changing a system that had previously worked well, the results have been extremely encouraging, with embryo implantation rates increasing significantly compared to previous years.

Whilst we always aim to achieve a steady rise in nutritional intake leading up to embryo implantation, we have found it is equally important to closely monitor recipient cows following implantation. Maintaining a consistent plane of nutrition during the critical period immediately after transfer appears to play a significant role in supporting embryo attachment and early pregnancy establishment.

By minimising nutritional fluctuations and ensuring recipient cows remain in a positive nutritional state, we believe we can maximise the likelihood of successful embryo retention and ultimately improve overall pregnancy outcomes.

Our recipient cows have never looked better or performed better. They are in outstanding condition and have produced more milk to raise their calves than we have witnessed in past seasons, reflecting the benefits of a well-balanced nutritional program.

While we have been fortunate to experience an exceptional finish to last season and a strong start to this year’s season, we believe the improvements in implantation rates can be largely attributed to the nutritional changes we introduced.

Based on these results, we intend to continue implementing these nutritional strategies in future embryo programs and look forward to achieving similarly positive outcomes as we continue to advance the genetic quality and performance of the Gumnut Downs herd.

The success of any embryo program relies not only on the quality of the genetics being implanted, but also on the management and care of the recipient females carrying those genetics. This year’s results have reinforced the importance of nutrition as a key driver of reproductive performance, and we are excited to see the outcomes of these pregnancies as the next generation of Gumnut Downs genetics begins to take shape.

Fresh pasture for this group of bulls today. Even with a paddock full of green feed ahead of them, they were more interested in coming over and standing alongside me while they grazed.

Quiet cattle like these are a pleasure to work with.

A Coleman Easy Decision calf born on the 6th February basking in this Spring like weather we are having today. We bought him and his contemporary group in to collect his DNA a few days ago so we can get their genomic testing done. He weighed 211kgs giving him an ADG of 1.53kg (3.3pounds)

After the big storm that rolled through over the last couple of days, it was great to get back out in the paddock and capture a few photos of the newborn calves that have arrived over the past three weeks.

These calves are sired by the following bulls:

• Dunoon Sunstone
• Ellingson Prolific
• Millah Murrah Rembrandt
• Coleman Easy Decision

All calves are the result of our second-round embryo transfer program and are out of our own donor females.

We look forward to watching these youngsters grow and progress through our program in the months and years ahead.

This bull calf was born on the 26th of January 2023, sired by Coleman Easy Decision, a heifer’s first calf, he is out of a Sitz Resilient daughter.

Last year we used Coleman Easy Decision throughout our heifer program and have been pleased with the results. This calving season has seen some quality heifers and bull calves sired by Easy Decision. We are excited about the consistency and quality this sire continues to deliver as the calves grow out.

Cidrs are in for our next embryo transfer run. The cows are doing exceptionally well with all of the green grass around at the moment, so this year we have decided to feed ad-lib straw to help bind them up and maintain a better rising plane of nutrition.

So far, it seems to be working very well, we are hopeful this approach will help us achieve improved conception rates for this program.

Tomorrow sees us bringing this group of recipient cows in to commence their program. They have been on a steady rising plane of nutrition, and we are looking forward to implanting some very exciting embryos sourced from outstanding programs both nationally and internationally.

Some of the embryos being implanted into these recipient cows will be out of Undine V009, a heifer in which we purchased a half share at the World Angus Forum, as well as embryos from the top-tier, and unfortunately now deceased, donor cow Donna 4356. This intake will also include embryos from two of our own donor cows — J178, who produced our top-selling bull last year, and the up-and-coming Arkle Royal Lass R31, who has been flushing exceptionally well and producing very clean, impressive calves in this year’s calving season.

We have also introduced one of R31’s daughters into the donor pen. She is sired by Alpine 38 Special, and some of her embryos will also be transplanted into this group of recipient cows.
