First lamb for the 2022 lambing season has arrived, a cracking little ram lamb from one of our original Fairburn ewes, sired by VALMA 212383 (Bought in partnership with Fairburn & Esperence Studs last year at the Adelaide Elite Sale).
Along with lambing starting early, we’ve been very busy lately, hence no updates!

Castella stud shearing 2021 is complete!🐑💪🏼

Fairburn 180722, who we believe is the best ewe in our breeding program for 2021, finally lambed this morning giving us two happy and healthy lambs, a ram and a ewe. 💪🏼
All of our ewes in our program this year have been displaying great maternal traits so far. Such as great udders and being very protective of their lambs! We have been recording these little things to help us improve on the maternal side of things in our stud.

We would like to thank Vivien from V M Murphy Livestock Services for coming to pregnancy scan at Castella this morning.
Our ewes were joined for 28 days in March and it worked a treat! Joined to Valma 192100 (purchased with Andrew Lakin, Esperance Stud, Lancefield) & KIS 160100, our ewes scanned at 170%, with 51 lambs expected! A lot of twins coming our way in August!
We are overwhelmed with the success for this year and we can’t wait to see all the lambs in August this year! 🐑🧬

Our main joining group for 2021 enjoying some lupins and hay during the foggy weather today! We have joined Valma 192100 (Purchased in partnership with Esperance Stud, Lancefield VIC) to 25 ewes this year, with ewe genetics including Castella, Fairburn, Mertex, Booloola, Waratah and Killara Studs! We also have KIS 160100, a repeat sire in the stud, in with some lovely ewes. We look forward to seeing what our two sires for 2021 produce for us this year.
Castella 200015 took out Champion White Suffolk Ewe & Lamb, and also swiped Reserve Champion Lamb of the Show at the Lang Lang Show 2021 today. Very happy and proud of this little ewe lamb! I believe she’ll grow into a great future breeding ewe for Castella.
200015 is out of Fairburn 150043, sired by KIS 160100.
Our little show team for Saturday’s Lang Lang Show are all ready, and we are super happy with how they look!
Bit of a bummer we didn’t get them out of their wool in time, but we’re still really happy and keen to see the results on Saturday.

Very pleased with how our 2020 drop are ticking along 🐑
Castella 200015 (sired by KIS 160100) with dam Fairburn 150043 (one of our founding ewes!). We’re very impressed with our drop of ewe lambs this year, with almost all of the 13 ewe lambs having great potential to be retained and bred with within the stud. We look forward to getting their weights at weaning and getting them out of their lambs wool soon.
Castella 190006, nicknamed “Katniss Junior” and dam, Killara 171051 “Katniss”. We have been watching 190006 closely since day 1, we think she’s the ‘top of the drop’ for 2020 here at Castella. She is sired by Wingamin 150402 (undefeated Senior Champion White Suffolk Ram in 2016). 190006 and many of our other lambs for 2020 are showing great growth and style, across multiple sires!
The last Castella lambs born for 2020 have arrived! Two healthy ram lambs sired by Booloola 190076, from Booloola 190360.
24 stud lambs in total on the ground for the year! Really impressed and happy with how all the lambs are looking and growing!

🐑 NEW STUD SIRE FOR 2021 🐑
We’re very excited to have purchased in partnership with Esperance White Suffolk Stud, Valma 192100.
192100 is in the top 20% for all LAMBPLAN indexes (TCP, EQ, LEQ and MCP), and is also in the top 10% for Post Weaning Weight.
We believe 192100 displays excellent muscling, great depth of body, and strong sound structure. Three of the things we are aiming for!
We look forward to seeing his progeny at Castella and Esperance in 2021 onwards. 🧬

More lambs for 2020 have arrived! With having lambs dropping like hot cakes at the start of August, then giving us a little break, they started up again yesterday when 3 of our Booloola ewes decided to all pop!

We’ve also had some impressive KIS 160100 lambs born at the start of August (our first ram lamb from 160100 pictured first). We’re very excited to see the rest of his progeny for 2020.

Last Wednesday we had our pregnancy scanning for 2020. We’re excited to announce we’ll be having 14 lambs from 10 ewes so far, 6 of which are from our A.i program we completed in March, using sire Wingamin 150402. We look forward to seeing these lambs in August, and also receiving more ewes in lamb in June and July!🐑

A.i 2020 for Castella is now complete, and it’s safe to say the process this afternoon went very smoothly, and our 9 ewes are back in the paddock nice and settled.
We look forward to hopefully seeing progeny from Wingamin 150402 on the ground at Castella in early August.
I’d firstly like to say thank you to John Stephenson from Millinup White Suffolk Stud in WA for the organisation of the semen from 150402. We appreciate it greatly, and can’t wait to be the 2nd stud in Australia with progeny from 150402.
Secondly I’d like to thank David and Emily from GENSTOCK in Hamilton for performing the A.i this afternoon.
I’d also like to thank my Pa for coming to help with loading ewes into the cradles.

Our 9 selected A.i ewes are shedded and getting settled for A.i tomorrow afternoon. We are beyond excited and proud of this line up of ewes and the genetics within them. We hope this drop of lambs has a big positive impact to the growing of Castella.
CIDR’s are out. PMSG is in. Our 9 selected ewes are ready for A.i in 48 hours time!
After making our final decision on which 9 ewes we would like to A.i to Wingamin 150402, CIDR’s are in and we couldn’t be more excited. We will also be naturally joining 3 ewes, which includes our 2019 drop ewe lamb which we hope to get some progeny out of.

Our two new additions from Mertex Texel & White Suffolk Stud settled in extremely well over the weekend, and we are happy to have gotten a proper photo of the both of them! We are certainly very excited to have these two handy ewes in our breeding program for 2020, and look forward to getting progeny from them for more years to come.

We couldn’t be happier with these two lovely ewes sired by Depta Drove 130084, and look forward to seeing their progeny in August! These two ewes along with 7 other selected ewes will be A.ied to Wingamin 150402 in a months time!

We’re very excited to announce our Artificial Insemination program for the start of March 2020 has been confirmed, and we can’t wait to A.i 9 ewes to Wingamin 150402 (Purchased by Millinup White Suffolk Stud, WA in 2016). Wingamin 150402 has been heavily used at Millinup, and they have received some outstanding progeny! We’re absolutely thrilled we have the opportunity to use 150402, and look forward to seeing his progeny from our stud ewes.
Our 4 new additions from Fairburn Sheep Studs have arrived safe and sound after a long trip home! We are very excited about our four new ewes, and can’t wait to add them into our A.I program in March 🐑
