Farm Update!

With a wet winter on our hands we have been in maintenance mode! And although the sun has been shining, which has kept our pastures growing, we're still out feeding hay to keep the bellies of our cattle warm and slow down their digestion to make the most out of the green grass.

With heads in hay bales, one cow managed to get a grass-seed caught in her eye, an easy and no fuss fix... But check out her ear tag! 1234 might be my new favourite girl on the place 🤣

UPDATE 🎉🎉🥂

Well it's been a busy couple of months but everything has been charging ahead at the farm! We recently celebrated our little cowboy's First Birthday, all of our autumn calving cows have had their babies (without any complications!), the weather has held out giving us a nice autumn growing season and the paddocks are looking flush!

Our business has undergone some updating as well.... our family partnership is now a company. Same family, same owners, same trading name, same great beef ---> just a new ABN and a fancy "Pty Ltd" at the end😉

Its time to stock the firewood pile and bunker down for a cold and wet winter ❄️
... but perhaps most exciting IS WE HAVE A NEW WEBSITE!!!!! We've updated our clunky old website and given it a make-over PLUS we can now accept card payments online when you place your order!

👉Check it out at www.glenairlie.com.au

NOW TAKING ORDERS FOR AUGUST (2 Sides left!) You have all been so amazing that we have been sold out 8 weeks in advance! We are thrilled that you are all enjoying our beef and we're excited to see our little business grow 💕

It’s getting harder and harder for small producers to stay truly “paddock to plate.”

With local abattoirs shutting down, farmers like us are feeling the pressure. We’re lucky — our abattoir is just 10 minutes down the road (BUT we used to have a few to choose from!). That proximity means less travel stress on our cattle, lower transport costs, better oversight of processing, and the ability to keep building our own brand with integrity.

When local facilities close, it’s not just an inconvenience. It means longer freight, higher costs, tighter margins and less control for family farms trying to sell direct to their communities. It makes it harder to offer genuinely local beef, processed locally, supporting local jobs.

Small abattoirs are critical infrastructure for regional Australia. Without them, farmers lose more than convenience — we lose opportunity.

If you care about where your food comes from, local processing matters more than most people realise.

Smaller livestock producers wanting to sell under their own brand or direct to the butcher are struggling to stay afloat.

Meet the Herd 🐮🐮🐮

This is my favourite cow in our herd at the moment... this 2019 born girl is tiny but mighty, with her calves regularly weaning 40kg heavier than everyone else's!

She's extra special to me because she was one of the first heifers I argued with dad to keep, and she's been an absolute ripper!

At 7 years old, we'd say she's right in her prime still, and she's got a beautiful heifer calf on her this year, which we're definitely keeping 😍

Her brindle colouring is a cool throw back to our stud Red Angus day's (Reds have quiet the colour variation; could make a whole post on the colour history of Angus!).

As a livestock geneticist myself, this girl is the perfect example of how phenotype (looks) is influenced by not just genetics but also by environment! Her mum was a first calving heifer, which would be a contributing factor to her small stature.

If you asked her, she'd say she's pretty good 😉
