As the great Chris Waller recently said,
“𝗦𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗶𝗻 𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗱𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲.”

And well… yesterday they came!

𝘼𝙣𝙤𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙬𝙞𝙣𝙣𝙚𝙧 𝙨𝙤𝙡𝙙 𝙗𝙮 𝙇𝙖𝙣𝙞𝙩𝙯𝙖 𝙎𝙩𝙪𝙙 🐎

It’s been 992 days since Coco Dreaming last stood in the winners’ circle, but I tell you what—her ownership group have backed her every second of the way.

Her path hasn’t been easy, and after surgery in 2024 she still wasn’t quite right. I was lucky enough to stay in touch with her owners, and we had a lengthy discussion about her future, as I’ve always said I’d love to have her home when she retires from racing.

I told them I knew of a trainer in Coffs Harbour who could probably get her back to her best. A fresh set of eyes, some good beach air and a whole lot of generational knowledge.

The owners agreed to change trainers to Sally Taylor Racing, so Coco was sent back to us at Lanitza Stud & Spelling for a well earned 7 week spell.

Coco then headed to Hilltop Farm for some dressage work. After her time at Hilltop, she went into the stables.

Sally has worked her magic, and she has had the longest preparation of her entire career which is a credit to Sally & her team.

Coco has had some shocking luck but still ran some terrific races this prep and has come oh so close, but yesterday she got the chocolates! 🥇

It truly takes a village to nurture and develop these athletes, and it takes wonderful owners trusting & believing in small-time breeders and trainers like Sally and myself, and yesterday belief was rewarded. 👏🏼

I saw Katie Van Slyke post a video of a new foal that was a little windswept. She was on the phone with her vet, asking questions, doing exactly what a responsible breeder should do.

And the comments?

“How does every foal she has have issues?”
That comment alone tells me someone has very little real experience with foaling.

Here’s the truth:

The breeders who seem to “have more problems” are usually just the ones who are transparent about them.

Foals can be born windswept. They can be weak. They can need plasma. They can need oxygen. They can need splints. Mares can retain placentas. Things can go sideways fast.

The general public just sees the cute baby running in the pasture.

Some people would genuinely pass out if they knew what most serious breeders quietly deal with every season.

And here’s something people really don’t want to hear — you would be surprised how many breeders simply DON’T call the vet. They just don’t share it… or they don’t address it.

Personally, I refuse to set unrealistic expectations. If you’re getting into breeding, you deserve the truth. It’s a risk. It’s emotional. It’s expensive. And yes — sometimes things go wrong even when you do everything right.

If you haven’t had issues, consider yourself fortunate. Truly.
But don’t let luck turn into arrogance.

Transparency isn’t incompetence.

Another speller headed off to Hilltop Farm last week for some pre-training dressage work before returning to the stables at Sally Taylor Racing. 🐎✨

During his 6 week spell at Lanitza Stud & Spelling he had:
