Once you live and grow with a permaculture lense you can't stop... It just keeps growing much like the food! ❤️

Just heard this term for the first time reading "Is a river alive" by Robert MacFarlane. Interesting and very relevant concept.
"Shifting baseline syndrome (SBS) is what happens when we forget how vibrant the natural world used to be. Each generation grows up with a more depleted environment and calls it “normal,” simply because it’s all they’ve ever known.

Think about walking through a park and thinking, “This seems healthy.” But maybe 30 years ago that same park had twice as many birds, wildflowers, or insects. If you never saw that version, you don’t feel the loss — and that quiet forgetting becomes the new baseline. Over time, we start accepting degraded ecosystems as normal.

Researchers warn that this shift lowers our expectations, increases our tolerance for decline, and reduces our urgency to protect what’s left.

What helps:

Intergenerational conversations that reconnect us with what nature used to be.

Direct experiences with nature that sharpen our awareness of change.

Remembering (knowing) the past is the first step to restoring the future"

My gorgeous neighbour snapped this photo and sent it to me...she correctly pointed out that our hose sits under the end of the rainbow. Surely that's a good sign yes?

So farm planning on the ground leads to a new project, don't worry we've only got about six other projects currently on the go 😂. Less "lawn" more food is always a good idea. We are relocating the companion planted potato garlic beds so be more accessible, with better planning and infrastructure such as w**d mat... not for under the veg but under deep woodchip paths to break down and become soil for our future planting. The recycled timber edging will help us keep the grass tamed. The bed has access to water when required and I walk past every time I teach yoga allowing me to see and respond regularly. Stay tuned for an update 👍

🌿 Exciting news for our local green thumbs and our Hannam Vale Community! 🌱

We are happy to announce the launch of the brand-new Community Seed Library, located at Hannam Vale Public School! 🏫🌻(see photo below of little black fridge on the verandah of the cottage)

A massive thank you to the school, who will be regularly contributing to this initiative through their fantastic Kitchen Garden Program. 🥕🍅 But to make this truly thrive, we need the community to get involved!

🤲 How does it work? Think of it as a community seed swap! The library runs on an honor system of "fair share." You can come and "borrow" seeds to plant in your garden at home. In return, we ask that you let a plant or two go to seed, harvest them, and return them to the library for others to use. It’s all about swapping, sharing, and ideally, trying to add a little more than you take so our collection stays abundant!

🌱 Why save and share local seeds?

Local Vigour: Seeds grown right here in Hannam Vale adapt to our specific microclimate, soils, and even local pests. Over time, sharing locally saved seeds means we are cultivating plants with incredible hybrid vigour—resulting in stronger, healthier, and much more productive gardens for everyone.

Community Resilience: We all know how heartbreaking it is when a sudden storm, frost, or pest wipes out a garden bed overnight. By maintaining a shared seed bank, we ensure that if someone's garden takes a hit, our community has the backup seeds ready to help them replant and recover. We are quite literally growing our resilience together! 🌦️💪

Come check it out, borrow some seeds, and let’s get planting!

Have you got any spare seeds sitting around at home to help us kickstart the collection? We'd love for you to drop them off! Let us know in the comments what you are currently growing. You can collect seed envelopes to fill from the school or spares inside the fridge. Or make your own.

Thanks, and happy growing 🌱
