Tropical Lawns 'Sustainability today and in the future': Turf from our family at Tropical Lawns to yours. Tropical Lawns has been growing Cairns turf since 1989.

We can assist with your home lawn needs, landscaping, golf/sport turf and erosion control. Cairns Turf - Growing at Tropical Lawns for over 20 years
Tropical Lawns has been growing Cairns turf since 1989. Supremely positioned to produce tropical lawns, this family owned and operated business is situated on 60 hectares of rich alluvial soils between the Mulgrave and Little Mulgrave Rivers, 30-minut

es south of Cairns city, at Gordonvale. Marketing was initially directed to home lawns and amenity landscaping. As the business grew and expanded, Tropical Lawns branched into the sports field and erosion control markets. Today, Tropical Lawns has 12 full-time employees, most of whom are qualified tradesmen in green keeping, landscaping and mechanics. The farm has its own fleet of specialized machinery, which is now available to contract out, providing services such as top dressing sports fields, land preparation, planting turf or stolons ( runners) on golf courses and parks and even overplanting fields with a different species or variety. Tropical Lawns is constantly investing in business development. Ongoing research and varietal selection has identified turf species and varieties that are adapted to the tropical climate and possess good environmental attributes. It has also identified many more that do not have these qualities, some of which are being promoted by others as being suited to all climates, from wet cloudy tropics to subtropical and cool season Australia. Tropical Lawns services clients across the region, state and world. The majority of its Cairns turf is sold locally from Cooktown to Townsville, the Atherton Tablelands, Cape York and the Torres Strait Islands. The latter delivery spends three days on a barge, so special handling and cooling requirements have been developed by Tropical Lawns to ensure the turf arrives in the very best condition, with optimal survival rates. Specialised Tropical Lawns turf varieties have also been exported to Thailand, Vietnam, Fiji and Vanuatu. Tropical Lawns has developed and holds plant variety ownership of two fine leaf grasses grown widely on resort golf course greens in tropical south-east Asia. SPRING IS HERE! Is your FNQ lawn ready?

Spring in Far North Queensland is the perfect time to give your lawn a little attention before the hotter, drier months arrive.

Our FNQ lawns have a few extra challenges — heat, humidity, changing rainfall, tropical weeds and periods of dry weather. A little preparation now can make a big difference later!

CHECK YOUR IRRIGATION
Don’t wait until your lawn starts struggling. Check sprinklers for blocked nozzles, leaks and uneven coverage. As the weather dries out, aim for deeper, less frequent watering rather than little amounts every day. This encourages stronger, deeper roots.

RESTORE NUTRITION
After the wetter months, your lawn may have depleted valuable nutrients. Spring is the time to rebuild its strength and prepare for the drier months ahead. A balanced turf fertiliser can help encourage healthy growth, colour and root development. Ask us what to get for your lawn.

GET ON TOP OF WEEDS EARLY
Warm temperatures mean weeds won't be waiting! Keep an eye out for broadleaf weeds, sedges and other tropical invaders. Removing or treating weeds early is much easier than letting them establish and compete with your turf for water and nutrients. Pro Tip: A strong lawn with all the nutrients it needs will have few to no weeds.

CHECK YOUR MOWER
As growth picks up, regular mowing becomes important. Keep your mower blades sharp and avoid cutting too low. A healthy mowing height helps protect the soil from heat and reduces moisture loss.

PREPARE FOR THE DRY MONTHS
The work you put into your lawn now helps it cope with the heat and (hopefully) reduced rainfall. Healthy soil, strong roots, good nutrition and efficient irrigation are the foundations of a resilient FNQ lawn.

Spring is the time to prepare — not panic when the lawn starts struggling!

Happy International Lawn Day, everyone.
Your lawn deserves a special day. The aim is to educate, engage and inspire everybody to love their lawn.❤

A little trivia fact: The date was chosen to mark the anniversary of August 31, 1830, which is the exact day Edwin Budding was granted a patent for the world's first mechanical lawnmower. The holiday was established to celebrate everything related to lawn and turf care, encouraging homeowners, backyard dreamers, and industry experts across the planet to connect and appreciate green spaces

CRUSHER DUST + TURF = A PROBLEM
One of the biggest mistakes we see when preparing a yard for new turf is using crusher dust as the underlay.
While crusher dust may seem like an easy and inexpensive way to level an area, it isn't designed to provide the ideal growing environment for turf roots.
Turf needs more than just something to sit on — it needs a healthy soil profile to grow into.
Cusher dust can compact, creating a dense layer beneath the turf. This can restrict root development and affect how water and air move through the soil.
And here in Far North Queensland, where we can go from very wet conditions to hot and dry weather, good drainage and healthy root development are especially important.
When the underlying material is compacted or doesn't drain properly, you can end up with turf that struggles to establish, develops weak roots, holds too much water or dries out unevenly.
The key to a great-looking lawn isn't just the turf you put on top — it's what you prepare underneath it.
- Prepare the soil correctly
- Use a suitable turf-growing soil
- Ensure the area has adequate drainage
- Get your levels right before laying
- Give the turf the best possible environment to establish its root system

Good turf starts from the ground up.

If you're preparing your yard for new turf and aren't sure what soil or preparation you should use, talk to us before you start — getting the base right can save you a lot of headaches later.

The daffodil is a symbol of hope for anyone whose life has been impacted by cancer. Daffodils are one of the first flowers to bloom after Winter. They represent new beginnings, resilience, and a brighter, cancer-free future💛

THREE THINGS YOUR TURF NEEDS TO THRIVE! ☀️💧🌿

Think of your lawn like any other living plant — it needs the right combination of water, nutrients and sunshine to grow well.

💧 WATER
Your turf needs water to stay hydrated and grow. Newly laid turf needs regular watering. Established lawns still need consistent moisture, especially during hot, dry weather. Water deeply rather than little and often, allowing the soil to dry slightly between watering to encourage strong, deep root growth.

🌿 NUTRIENTS
The right fertiliser provides the nutrients your turf needs for healthy roots, strong growth and good colour. In FNQ, fertilise your established turf after the wet season, when most nutrients are used or washed out, around October, using a slow-release, turf-specific fertiliser with a balanced nutrient supply.
We can help you. Come and visit our farm shop.

☀️ SUNSHINE
Turf needs sunlight to photosynthesise — that's how it makes the energy it needs to grow. Too much shade can result in thin, weak turf, poor colour and bare patches. If you have shaded areas, talk to us for the right turf variety.

The key is BALANCE!

If your lawn is struggling, don't automatically assume it needs more water. Ask yourself:

💧 Is it getting enough water?
🌿 Does it have the nutrients it needs?
☀️ Is it receiving enough sunlight?

When these three things work together, your turf has the best chance of staying healthy, green, and strong.

Healthy turf doesn't happen by accident — it starts with giving your lawn what it needs to grow!
