The black cattle myth
Have you ever had anyone say to you ‘why do you run coloured cattle when you make so much more with black cattle?’ Well I have and every time I hear it I try to explain that more kilos equals more money. The aim of the game is to convert grass to beef faster.
Today we weighed our weaner calves and the result shattered the black cattle myth.
The coloured steers (shorthorn, simmental/ fleckvieh) averaged 292kg and the black steers ( angus, angus x shorthorn, angus x hereford, angus x simmental ) averaged 245kg. In the current market the colours would make $1392 @$4.80kg and the Angus $1250 @ $5.10kg .
That’s a difference of $142 a head at weaning! All run under the same conditions in mixed mobs and even with the benefit of hybrid vigour and extra cents a kilo the black cattle come out well behind.
This is why we have made the switch to breeding Simmental/ Fleckvieh cattle. The results speak for themselves.

To the farm mums who’ve done the school run, fed the poddies, checked the heifers, and cleaned the house.

The ones who can back a trailer, draft sheep, nurse sick animals and still remember who needed a permission slip signed.

No days off, no fuss — just getting stuck in and getting it done.
