This dish really screams Crete to me! It reminds me how many times I’ve enjoyed this dish when visiting relatives and how I’ve never forgotten it! Έγλειφα τα δάχτυλά μου😋

There is just something about a homemade fried meatball. Maybe it’s the crispy edges, the juicy centre, the fresh herbs or that beautiful flavour from frying them in olive oil. Or maybe it’s simply that they remind us of home.

“ How people in Greece make” Winter edition Part 20 ❄️

If someone in our family says, “I’m making makaronia me kima, come over,” you can guarantee everyone suddenly has plans to be at their house for dinner!
And it works the other way too. One family member will say, “I’m making makaronia me kima tonight, what are you making?” And if the answer happens to be something a little boring, well… we’re probably changing our dinner plans and heading over for the makaronia me kima! That’s how much we love it.

Funny enough, after sharing and creating so many beautiful Greek recipes here on Deb’s Homecooking for more than 10 years, my favorite is this one! But sometimes the simplest food is the food that means the most.

“How people in Greece make” Winter edition Part 19 ❄️

Yiayiathes that live in Crete that lived to 100 or more, these women weren’t thinking about “superfoods” or following a diet plan. They were simply cooking what their families had always eaten. Beans, lentils, chickpeas and other legumes were part of everyday village cooking — inexpensive, nourishing, filling and easy to turn into a beautiful meal.
I love looking back at these traditional foods and remembering just how important legumes were in the everyday Cretan diet.

As Melbourne gets closer to spring, I’m already thinking about all the beautiful vegetables we’ll soon have coming into season. So when I found these beautiful white zucchinis, I knew exactly what I wanted to make… κολοκυθάκια με αβγά, a simple Greek zucchini omelette.

Also I’ve fallen down a Egg and Sfakianaki Hole and I ain’t complaining 😂💃

Youvetsi is actually one of my dad’s favourite meals on the planet. And if you know my dad, you’ll know that he is also one of my biggest critics! 😂 He has always been very honest with me when it comes to my cooking, and when ever I make Youvetsi, I know exactly what he expects. It has to be silky, It has to be juicy. It has to be perfect!
Every time I make this Youvetsi, I think about my dad. Babaka this one’s for you… Σε αγαπώ ❤️

Mum would have this ready for us very often after school… years later, I find myself making this for my own daughter, who absolutely loves it also. I love that food can carry those memories from one generation to the next. There’s something so special about cooking the recipes you grew up with and watching your own children enjoy them too.
