Food is donated by farmers, wholesalers, markets and supermarkets.
We rescue good quality, surplus food destined for waste from growers, manufacturers and retailers and distribute it free of charge to around 1,400 community food agencies across Australia to feed those in need. Formally established in 2005, SecondBite was the idea of Ian and Simone Carson who decided they could no longer watch good food go to waste whilst people went hungry. In 2013–14 SecondBite
rescued and redistributed over 5.6 million kg of fresh food, providing in excess of 11.2 million healthy meals to people in need all around Australia – an increase of our reach and depth in the community of nearly 58% over the past year. Our recipient community food programs provide vital support for people in need – individuals and families who are experiencing homelessness, poverty, violence, youth at risk, disadvantaged indigenous communities, asylum seekers and new arrivals. SecondBite’s cost-free supply of surplus fresh food adds nutritional and economic value to community food programs. It enables them to provide highly nutritious food to their clients, whilst at the same time freeing up their budgets to re-direct into their other core services. Recent research explores the social and nutritional impact of fresh rescued food on community food programs and the people that access them. It revealed that fresh rescued food represented 65% of recipients’ total intake of fruit and vegetables for the day. In addition, SecondBite’s 2013-14 recipient agency survey revealed that close to 30% of these programs would not be able to offer a food program to benefit their clients if they did not receive regular donations of fresh food from SecondBite. SecondBite redistributes fresh food through three efficient models; Direct Delivery, SecondBite Hubs in metropolitan and regional areas, and SecondBite Community Connect™ which connects local food donors directly to local community groups in regional and remote locations. This sustainable and award winning program was created in 2009 in Victoria and is now operating nationally. SecondBite currently employs 90 full-time, part-time and casual staff supported by over 630 volunteers, has 11 warehouse hubs and operates 22 vehicles. NSW Agency Coordinator Andrew took a trip to visit the Young Spirit Foundation- a charity supporting Aboriginal communities within the Minto area.
With the partnership between SecondBite and the Young Spirit Foundation, 200 people now have access to food relief 🍎

Meet Eric and Heather 😎 They have been charity partners since SecondBite began operating in South Australia.

During the launch of Queensland’s newest Community Connect™ Partnership, Coles Yarrabilba Store Manager Tanya not only provided local Agency Partner 5FOLD with a warm welcome, but also with an inspiring insight into her team’s outstanding commitment to ending food waste.
Tanya’s proactive approach to Sustainability has enabled the Coles Yarrabilba team to develop a 7-day-per-week donation schedule supporting no less than three SecondBite Agency Partners, with twice-daily donations on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, and 5FOLD’s arrival making for an amazing three donations per day each Wednesday!
Tanya and her team have already reduced the number of General Waste (landfill) collections at Coles Yarrabilba from 5 to 3 per week and are now working hard on reducing weekly Organic Waste skip collections from two to one.
It’s partners like Team Yarrabilba who help transform our motto “Ending Hunger – Ending Waste” from distant ideal to daily impact! 🍎💪
Those who work together, stay together 💪 We provided a substantial amount of chicken wings to the team at this week and their chefs worked their magic to produce these delicious meals with rice and greens!

Growing numbers of Australians are seeking food relief, with a new cohort of need emerging – individuals and families who have previously been able to support themselves via personal savings or regular employment.

2022 has been a tough year for thousands of Queenslanders whose homes, businesses, and livelihoods were devastated by extreme weather. After visiting these affected areas, the SecondBite Queensland team wanted to find a way to support those impacted.
With support & funding from the Department of Social Services, the SecondBite Queensland team is deploying its considerable skill and experience in the transport, storage, and distribution of food to assist flood-affected communities on their long road to recovery.
In weeks to come, SecondBite Agency Partners in Queensland’s Gold Coast, Ipswich, Moreton, Sunshine Coast, and Wide Bay Regions will receive multiple bulk deliveries of long-life food staples for distribution.
This ongoing relief effort rolls out in tandem with similar deliveries throughout NSW and includes cross-border coordination with our NSW team to service such hard-hit Regions as the Northern Rivers 👏

Meet the team behind Marlin Coast Meals on Wheels 👋
Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning you'll find their volunteer team hard at work preparing delicious three-course meals, ingredients for which are sourced through a Community Connect Partnership with nearby Coles Clifton Beach 🍎
The vital service provided by Marlin Coast Meals on Wheels extends well beyond a simple hearty dinner. As Coordinator Pauline says, “Our friendly volunteers, as well as delivering meals to our clients, also provide them with social contact thereby assisting them to continue living independently at home.” 💪
This is Port Douglas Neighbourhood Centre. Geoff and his team joined the SecondBite Community Connect program in late 2019 and began collecting food donations from the Coles Port Douglas 🌴
The Community Connect partnerships between Coles Port Douglas, Port Douglas Neighbourhood Centre and Mossman Youth Services (20 minutes further north) represent the northernmost reach of SecondBite programs in Queensland!
The endurance and creativity of this vital local service was tested many times during the months that followed, as 2020’s COVID-19 lockdowns impacted heavily on a local community.
Fortunately, donations from the Coles Port Douglas team support the PDNC in providing emergency food relief 5 days per week, along with a men’s breakfast every Wednesday morning 👏

Good Start Early Learning Thornlie (GSELT) did not have the resources to collect donations from our SecondBite warehouse so Destiny Empowered Christian Church (DECC) came to the rescue and decided to put their hand up to assist!
Destiny Empowered Christian Church (DECC) collect from our WA warehouse every Thursday and deliver GSELT donations direct to their door. This allows struggling families to grab much needed food staples when they drop or pick up their child/children.

It is incredible that today almost 2 million Australians are living in poverty and do not have regular access to safe, nutritious, affordable food. The 11.2 million meals provided by SecondBite’s fresh food redistribution last year made a positive difference to the lives of thousands of individuals and families across Australia, yet represents only a tiny percentage of the need – we look forward to achieving so much more. SecondBite needs and very much appreciates everyone’s ongoing support, which together is really helping to make a positive difference to the health, well-being and social inclusion of vulnerable people in our community with access to fresh, nutritious food.

Want to get the most out of your potatoes? 🍠 here’s how to make Potato Skin Fries! What you’ll need:4 large potatoes3 tsp olive oil 1/2 tsp salt1/2 tsp pepper Loaded toppings: Leftover coleslaw mix Your choice of sauce 1. Wash your potatoes. 2. Bake potatoes until lightly golden. 3. Remove potatoes from the oven. Cut and scoop out pulp (save this for a creamy mash recipe!) then lightly season potatoes with oil, salt & pepper for an additional 10 minutes or until skins are crispy.4. So, in the spirt of conscious consumerism, check out some of these egg-cellent suggestions to enjoy your Easter weekend sustainably: • Only buy eggs that you know will be enjoyed, and repurpose or make your own gifts, wrapping and decorations. Charity shops also have great decorations! • Check the packaging weight vs product weight (bigger boxes aren’t always better!) and choose eggs that have less packaging • Plan your Easter feast and use all your leftovers for lunches or put in the freezer to enjoy another day • Look for products and packaging made from recycled materials and place your plastic, aluminium and cardboard wrapping in the correct waste bins at home • Scrunch all your Easter egg foil together when recycling – you need at least a golf ball size to place it in your recycling bin And lastly, share the Easter joy a little further by making a donation to SecondBite. Early this month more than 60 staff from Wesfarmers Perth office attended a team building day @PerthCityFarm run by Sophie Budd from @tastebudds Cooking Studio. In April, SecondBite ambassador Jessie Stephens visited our agency partner Bankstown Women's Health Centre in NSW to see their inspiring work. Among their services, the centre provides a food relief program for locals. Every Thursday community members can come by appointment to receive fresh produce, dry goods and frozen meals. Staff and volunteers put together the nutritious and culturally appropriate food relief packages. 90% of the food the centre provides each week comes from SecondBite. Even before the recent lockdowns, our research revealed that 3 out of 4 of our charity partners have seen an increase in demand for food relief. Demand has since soared. Bankstown is now part of the LGA facing some of the toughest restrictions in Sydney. So many people are really struggling to feed their families. On Tuesday this week our volunteers and team members from our charity partners were guests of honour at the Nandonation Dinner at the Belmont Forum in Western Australia. Divine You is a wellness retreat for cancer sufferers and carers. Locals could come and collect the fresh produce as needed. Some - like the lady and boy pictured at rear of their car - helped others by taking some donated produce for residents in a Karinya nursing home and independent living aged care units. And the man ‘skinning’ the oranges is making free OJ for people about to turn up to access the donated food! STOP! Don't throw out those 'disgustingly ripe' bananas! SecondBite Ambassador Yumi Stynes shared her amazing, super easy banana bread recipe with us during her recent visit to SecondBite's charity partner Our Big Kitchen. It's the perfect thing to do with those bananas you have lying around getting browner by the day. Australians are absolutely mad for bananas – we produce thousands of tonnes each year. Unfortunately, they're also one of our most wasted foods. About 1 in 3 bananas are thrown away. Not only is this recipe delicious and easy, it helps reduce waste by using bananas that you might otherwise think are inedible. THE ONLY BANANA BREAD RECIPE YOU’LL EVER NEED Prep time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 50 minutes Ingredients: Olive oil spray 3 disgustingly ripe bananas (250 grams) 60 grams softened butter 90ml liquid coconut oil or fresh-tasting olive oil 250 grams sugar (any kind) ¼ teaspoon of ground nutmeg 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 2 eggs 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) 100 ml milk 1 teaspoon white vinegar Pinch of salt 250 grams plain (all-purpose) flour 100 grams/ 1 cup chopped walnuts or pecans, lightly chopped Directions: Preheat the oven to 180 ºC. Combine all ingredients (except nuts, if using) in a food processor and blend until smooth. Add nuts if using. Pour batter into a bread tin, and bake for 50 minutes. Enjoy with butter, honey, peanut butter, mascarpone...whatever floats your boat!

There was much buzz and excitement at our Melbourne warehouse this Monday when the MasterChef Australia and Channel 10 news teams visited us. MasterChef judge Jock Zonfrillo; contestants Aaron, Brett, Linda and Sabina; and journalist Brendan Crew joined to help promote SecondBite's Winter Appeal which kicks off next week. This year we're aiming to raise enough funds to deliver 1 million meals to vulnerable Aussies. Jock, Brett and Sabina helped to sort and pack produce in our warehouse, while Linda and Aaron helped to prepare and serve meals to people in need at our charity partner St Mary's House of Welcome. Severe Tropical Cyclone Seroja was a deadly tropical cyclone that impacted Western Australia's mid west region, affecting Kalbarri, Northumberland, Perenjoni, Mingenew, Geraldton and Morawa. Homes have been destroyed and more than 20,000 residents were left without power after the cyclone made landfall as a category 3 storm at about 8pm on Sunday 11 April, bringing wind gusts of up to 170 kilometres per hour. People lost homes, business and community buildings, power and communications. By Wednesday 14 April the 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗕𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗪𝗔 team got together 12 pallets of food - some donated by 𝗠𝗖𝗖𝗢. We called our amazing SecondBite friend Paul Cole at 𝗗𝗖𝗚 𝗥𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹𝘀 and he generously lent us a 10 pallet truck free of charge. HandsandFeet came along in their truck so that we could ensure we could get as much food to the cyclone relief as possible. We delivered food, toiletries and cleaning supplies to Northumberland Community Group, Sun City Christian Centre, Geraldton, and Geraldton Evacuation Centre, who were still without power and had limited communications. They were incredibly grateful. When we dropped in at Geraldton Evacuation Centre, we were delighted to see Team Coles Geraldton there helping and waiting for the delivery of emergency supplies from Coles Distribution Centre in Perth. #CycloneSeroja
