FareShare is a charity that has been cooking free, nutritious meals for people doing it tough since 2001. We believe that every Australian deserves a nutritious meal, regardless of their circumstances or location. FareShare operates Australia’s largest non-profit kitchens in Melbourne and Brisbane where chefs and volunteers work hand in hand to cook the best possible meal for every person in need.

Each year FareShare transforms rescued, donated and our homegrown food into millions of delicious, healthy meals that feed dignity and wellbeing for Australians experiencing hardship. A homestyle meal shows that somebody cares and has an immediate impact. Our healthy meals are given away free to frontline charities such as soup vans, homeless shelters, women’s refuges and community food banks. The demand for meal relief has never been higher with the soaring cost of living, frequent natural disasters and the lingering effects of the pandemic hurting millions of Australians. As a charity we rely on the generosity of philanthropic foundations, businesses and individual donors. When you support FareShare, you are not just feeding someone in need. You are giving them a ready-to-eat meal which takes the worry out of going hungry and the stress out of cooking. Visit us for more https://www.fareshare.net.au/

A few FareShare staff attended the premiere of A Christmas Carol Australia last night. They were treated to a spectacular, festive, fun production that delivered a poignant message about humanity and kindness. We are thrilled to be the charity partner of such a wonderful show. Huge thanks to GWB Entertainment, the cast and crew, and everyone else involved in making this partnership happen.

Geelong local Tyson lives with his mum and his teenage son, Mark. Sadly, Tyson’s income and his mum’s pension barely cover their rent, petrol and bills. That’s why the family is so appreciative of the FareShare meals they get from Geelong Food Relief Centre, like this calamari pasta with broccoli meal that our volunteer Marion is proudly holding up.

“I feel so bad when Mark goes to school hungry, but sometimes there is nothing at home to eat,” says Tyson. “The food is so good at the Food Relief Centre. We love the frozen FareShare meals. My mum can’t cook anymore because of her arthritis so we get as many as we can each time we go. They are a lot better than my cooking!”

You can help us provide free, nutritious, tasty meals to Tyson’s family and so many others like his by kindly supporting our Christmas Appeal. Thank you. https://bit.ly/xmas-appeal-2023

As the old saying goes, ‘Many hands make light work’. And this is certainly true in the FareShare Brisbane kitchen, where these happy regular volunteers put a lot of care and consideration into each of the free, nutritious meals they help prepare. On the menu this week: roast chicken with mashed potato, roasted sweet potato, green beans and gravy. Delish!

So great seeing our chef James in the Courier Mail on Saturday! This article did such a wonderful job of showcasing his Michelin-starred restaurant experience and how James and all our chefs put so much pride and care into every free, nutritious meal we cook for people doing it tough at the moment.

On Saturday, chef James, our First Nations Officer Jason, and four of our wonderful volunteers – Alana, Pat, Cathy & Georgina – served up over 1,200 pork, chicken and vegetarian FareShare meals and 400 cheesecake with blueberry compote desserts at Altru Festival.

Altru Festival is an annual outreach activation event held across multiple cities that focuses on tangible, effective altruism, connecting vulnerable and disadvantaged individuals with the resources they need to succeed, raising awareness about homelessness, and celebrating the humanity within.

“What a great day,” chef James said. “Everyone we met was so appreciative of the meals, thankful for those who had helped make them, generous with their smiles and compliments. It was also inspiring for our volunteers to experience a side they don’t normally get to experience – meeting the recipients of our meals. It doesn’t get much better.”

Big shout-out to Floyd and Craig from Goondir Health Services for the use of the Big Buddy food truck, and to Jessie and everyone else from Altru for organising the festival. We look forward to the next Altru event in Melbourne in April.

We are excited to announce that we are expanding this partnership by trialling DigIn’s custom-built vending machines at Murri School, where our tasty, healthy meals will help ensure students do not go hungry and always have access to balanced, nutritious meals for optimal learning and wellbeing.

We love getting out and meeting our awesome charity partners! Recently, FareShare checked in with Stav and the friendly ADRA Community Care - Melton/MSCC team for the first time. Every Friday, they provide essential food relief services to around 160 households. According to Stav (pictured, right), the rising costs of food, rent, interest rates and bills have had a big impact on the community. “It’s just not possible for a lot of people, especially families and pensioners…We’re really grateful for your meals. I’ve never heard a bad word about them.” We’re proud that our free, nutritious meals are proving popular and helping to ease the cost-of-living crisis for some of the people doing it tough in Melton.

This week, FareShare celebrated another milestone 🥳: we have now delivered 250,000 meals to Burringilly Indigenous Services, our biggest First Nations meal partner! Burringilly acts as an important hub, distributing our meals to 20 local services and charities in the Southside and Logan areas. “It’s great that we have been able to distribute 250,000 meals to our local community,” Aunty Chrissy (pictured, middle) says. “Our clients from local organisations, schools and First Nations groups appreciate the nutritional meals they receive when needed.” Learn more about our First Nations program here: https://www.fareshare.net.au/first-nations/

With this harvest, our gardens staff member Danny is clearly the pumpKing of our patch. Here he is being too ghoul for school as he poses alongside a plethora of pumpkins grown in our kitchen gardens. We hope everyone who eats our free, nutritious meals today finds them especially eerie-sistible, and that you all have a faBOOlous Halloween…provided these puns haven’t given you too much of a fright 🎃👻!

Our kitchens are famous for reunions. Here’s Nicole, who’s taking a break from regular volunteering during our kitchen rebuild, making a guest appearance with her colleagues on a corporate volunteer shift with Vicinity Centres last week. She was thrilled to catch up with Tania and crew at our temporary kitchen in Alphington, and to roll up her sleeves again to help cook hundreds of very colourful, nutritious teriyaki stir-fry meals for people who need them.

We love it when a Schools in the Kitchen alumni remembers us! Jas spent a morning at FareShare in high school. Now a Macquarie Bank graduate (way to go, Jas!), she knew exactly which charity to suggest for their Footy Final Eve fundraiser. As you can see, the Macquarie Bank Graduate Volunteer Network did a great job organising fun footy-themed activities and raising over $750 to help our chefs cook nutritious meals for people doing it tough. In fact, the event was so popular, they are keen to make it an annual tradition. Thank you all for your generous support.

23/10/2023

There is much to be gleaned from the Foodbank Australia Hunger Report 2023, which was released today… 3.7 million households in Australia are struggling to put food on the table – 2.3 million are severely food insecure. The main reason is the cost of living, with 59% of people swapping fresh food for cheaper alternatives and 48% not buying as much fresh produce and protein. These worrying trends lead to poorer nutrition. FareShare’s focus on adding nutrition to our free, complete meals gives people doing it tough the healthy ingredients required to maintain overall health and wellbeing.

Thanks to Neil and The Big Group for donating 80kgs of snags and dozens of boxes of apples, mandarins and bananas to FareShare. Our chefs couldn’t wait to cook them into homestyle meals for people who need them. As we 'Try for 5' this Nutrition Australia National Nutrition Week, volunteers Richard and Karen present two of the cutest cauliflowers we’ve ever added into our free, nutritious meals for people doing it tough. We love growing cauliflower and cooking it into our meals because it packs such a nutritional punch – it is rich in vitamin C, vitamin K and folate – and for its versatility and flavour.

FareShare Brisbane celebrated its 5th birthday on Friday! Over 100 volunteers, supporters, food relief partners, friends and family gathered as the sun set to revel in the festivities, enjoy a delicious meal and cake cooked by chef James, acknowledge the volunteers who have been with us since the very beginning, and listen to impassioned speeches by our Executive Director Fiona, James, and FareShare board member Margot.

We would like to extend a big thank you to Di Farmer MP, the representatives from Foodbank Queensland, SecondBite and OzHarvest Queensland, our longstanding supporters from Lineage Logistics and AgTrade, and everyone else who attended. It was a beautiful night.

As part of their Global Impact Day last week, this fabulous team from Nielsen dropped off an impressive amount of vegetable oil, pasta, rice, tinned tomatoes and spices. Once our chefs add rescued or grown vegetables and some protein, we will be able to cook over 450 tasty, nutritious meals for people doing it tough with these essential ingredients. A big thank you for your fabulous efforts and for stopping by 🙏.

Regular volunteer Pat boasts a unique FareShare accolade: he was the first person to sign up to volunteer at FareShare Brisbane! Five years later, he’s still going strong.

“I am passionate about being able to participate in a movement which takes food from a number of areas, prepares it and then is able to distribute the meals to so many people,” says Pat.

“I’m proud to be part of a team which has prepared several million meals to assist in the lives of those in need as well as people affected by disasters. FareShare has kept me active in the community and allows me to contribute my time and energies for good.”

Now retired, Pat says he will continue to volunteer at FareShare for as long as he is able and welcome. If you’d like to join Pat and our other volunteers in our Brisbane kitchen, click here: https://www.fareshare.net.au/volunteering-brisbane/

Pat will also be appearing on ABC Brisbane Radio tomorrow morning at around 8.45am (local time; 9.45am AEDT) to speak about volunteering at FareShare. Be sure to tune in 📻!

Our Brisbane kitchen turns 5 this week 🥳! Susan is one of the volunteers who has been with us since the very beginning (thanks, Susan, and happy FareShare anniversary!)

To her, the highlight has been the overall impact of helping cook almost six million meals for people in need. Susan also values the sense of community she gets from volunteering. Catching up with her fellow, like-minded volunteers is a key reason she keeps coming back every week. “I have made friends. Plus, I enjoy the simplicity and structure of the role. And I feel like I’ve made a tangible difference when I finish my shift.”

If you’d like to mingle while making a tangible difference to people in our community, find out more about volunteering in our Brisbane kitchen here: https://www.fareshare.net.au/volunteering-brisbane/

Our garden volunteers are a hardy bunch. Earlier this week, they managed to retain their smiles and can-do attitudes in the face of the heavy Melbourne downpours. Here’s Kath and Jim with a bounty of Gia Lan/Chinese broccoli they harvested that morning, and new volunteer Susan (welcome to the FareShare community, Susan!) clearly enjoying her first shift despite getting sodden in the process. That’s dedication!

Agronomy is the science of soil management and crop production. Thanks to our friends at E.E. Muir & Sons Pty. Ltd. (who also donate essential garden equipment), we have the ongoing support of one of their up-and-coming agronomists, Maddy. Maddy helps tailor our fertiliser schedule, test our soil, and enable our veggies to grow as healthily as possible. We’re very lucky to have her. Please give her a big, green thumbs up if you see her around.

Footy frenzy! This week, our staff and volunteers got into the spirit of the footy finals. Bill and Julie locked horns in Brisbane, not only over state rivalries but also sporting codes! Luckily, they put their differences aside to help prepare hundreds of tasty meals for people facing hardship. Props to Dean for painting his nails black and white – that’s dedication – and to Julie for the mean roar pose. Meanwhile, our Collingwood-mad logistics manager Pat has been proudly sporting his guernsey and scarf. Enjoy the matches everyone and may the best teams win.

Today is the annual International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste, which highlights the importance of food waste action.

Given that 1/3 of all food is wasted (equivalent to each Australian throwing away 24 burgers a week) at a cost of $36.6 billion a year to the Australian economy, there is no time to waste! Let’s work towards reducing and transforming Australia’s food waste.

FareShare continues to fight food waste by rescuing surplus, quality food that would otherwise go to waste. Here’s chef Polly proudly holding up a vegetarian bean casserole meal, and a tray full of roast dinners, cooked with rescued ingredients. We are a proud signatory of the Australian Food Pact, a multi-year commitment to reduce food waste.

Could this be an omen for Saturday? We’ve been spotting magpies around Melbourne all week. Resident Alphington magpie Lucky and his three mates have been even friendlier than usual. His brethren have been all over our Abbotsford kitchen garden too, snacking on pests and scaring the whiskers off our staff member Haydn's cat tat. We hope our VIC and QLD communities enjoy the Footy Final and Monarch’s Birthday long weekends respectively!

It was go chard or go home for our happy QLD volunteers last week as they got through mountains of the nutrient-rich veggie. Chard (or silverbeet) is closely related to beetroot and is packed with dietary fibre, folic acid, vitamins A, B6 and C, and iron. It’s also a wonderfully versatile vegetable for our chefs to add into so many of our healthy, ready-to-eat meals for people doing it tough at the moment!

Recently, our volunteer programs manager Rosie was invited to speak at the Canterbury Uniting Church Victoria & Tasmania by Rod, one of our regular volunteers. With 9 years of knowledge and experience at FareShare, Rod told the congregation about what FareShare does before handing the mic to Rosie, who talked about our impact and volunteering. The church also ran a bake sale with proceeds being donated to FareShare. Thank you for having us and for your support, Uniting Canterbury 🙏

FareShare relishes the opportunity to share our story with schools, businesses, churches, community groups and clubs. If you would like to book a FareShare speaker, please get in touch here: https://bit.ly/fsspeaker

FareShare’s free nutritious meals change lives.

FareShare’s mission is simple. We rescue food that would otherwise go to waste and cook it into free nutritious meals for vulnerable people.

The gift of a cooked, nutritious meal to someone in crisis is truly life-affirming. It boosts health, energy and wellbeing when needed most and shows that people care.

Right now more people than ever need our meals and our Melbourne and Brisbane kitchens are doing everything humanly possible to keep cooking.
