With many people facing fuel issues it’s unbelievable to me that we have the teal “independents” out there telling us that we need to get farmers off their addiction to fuel and move to electric. They want to do this by increasing the tax on fuel used off road.
The Teals are not being honest about the so called 'subsidy'. We don’t pay excise on the fuel used in this tractor because we don’t use it on the road. Fuel excise was originally introduced as a way to pay for the upkeep of roads, hence any fuel used off road was not subject to the tax. It’s extremely hypocritical of them to call this a subsidy while seemingly ignoring the very real subsidies paid to their backers in the renewable energy sectors. Not being slugged a tax because it’s not relevant to you is not a subsidy, handing over tax payer dollars to corporations is a subsidy.
I would happily use an electric tractor if the technology existed, was reliable and cost effective. The simple fact is that they don’t exist. The tractor pictured here is over 400kW. Running it for a 16 hour day would require some 6400kW/h which is the equivalent of roughly 80 Tesla car batteries. Please tell me how taxing me more would change this?
All you would do is hurt Australians with this so called plan. We are a tiny player in the world machinery market and companies are not going to make machinery just because fuel is expensive for us here in Australia. This cost would eventually flow through to consumers at the checkout.
We should be doing everything we can to make all forms of energy as cheap as possible. Cheap energy plays an enormous role is driving productivity and keeping inflation and cost of living in check. Policies such as these do nothing but hurt the entire country.
