Why we always recommend to pen new hens for 1–2 weeks 🐔

Chickens don’t automatically know where “home” is — they learn it. By keeping new hens confined to their coop and run for the first 7–14 days, you’re helping them establish a strong roosting habit and recognise that space as their safe place.

At dusk, hens naturally seek the highest “safe” perch. If they haven’t been trained to return to the coop, they’ll choose trees, fences, or sheds instead — which leaves them exposed to predators, weather, and makes it very hard to get them back in.

Once they consistently go up on the roost inside the coop each night, you can let them free range with confidence they’ll return on their own.

Skip this step, and you may end up with situations like this Lohmann White… choosing the tree over the coop 🌳

Why we free range our Hy-Line Brown hens 🐔🌿

Our hens are proudly free range, meaning they have the space and freedom to live the way chickens should—outdoors, foraging, scratching, and soaking up the sunshine.

For us, it’s simple—healthier, happier hens lay better eggs. Free ranging supports their natural behaviours and overall wellbeing, which shows in the rich, golden yolks and strong, quality eggs they produce.

It’s a more natural way of raising poultry, and one we believe makes all the difference—for the hens and for you.

Heritage vs Commercial Australorp – What’s the Difference?

At first glance, they may look similar—but these two types of Australorps are bred for very different purposes.

Heritage Australorp -
Bred to the original standard, heritage Australorps focus on longevity, natural growth, and maintaining traditional breed traits. They’re hardy, calmer in nature, and often preferred for sustainable backyard flocks.
Visually, they tend to have a fuller, more rounded body, dark brown/black eyes, a rich green sheen through their feathers, and darker slate/black shanks that match the breed standard.

Commercial Australorp (Hybrid Black) -
These birds are selectively bred for high egg production. They mature faster, are lighter in body, and will typically lay more consistently—especially in their first couple of years. However, this productivity can come at the cost of longevity and true breed characteristics.
Visually, they are usually leaner with a lighter frame, often have lighter, more reddish-toned eyes, flatter-looking feathering with I less sheen and sometimes some red leakage and can have lighter or greyish shanks. Still a great flock addition especially if you want a lot of eggs!

We breed both varieties on the farm!

Heritage Australorp are off season currently but we have point of lay commercial Australorp available in a couple of weeks!
