TASMANIANS PAY UP TO $2.7 MILLION PER DAY IN FUEL TAX!
But somehow the abuse is being directed at local fuel companies.
Over the last three weeks since the war broke out in the Middle East, we have been criticised for our fuel pricing, and we’d like to make a few things clear:
We are a 100% Tasmanian-Owned & Operated fuel distributor, NOT a big oil company.
Yet during this time our staff have been abused daily, our sites vandalised, and unbelievably we have even received a message from someone threatening to blow up our office.
All because we are passing on wholesale fuel price increases that have been imposed on us, sometimes 10–20 cents per litre PER DAY.
This pricing is transparent to the public; all major oil companies post a terminal gate price daily.
Let’s put that into perspective, a B-Double Tanker carrying 45,000L, the difference between loading the same fuel at 11.59pm or 12.01am on a 20c rise day is $9000
These are prices given to us; not prices we invent.
Who is really making money?
The Federal Government currently collects:
• 52.6 cents per litre in fuel excise
• GST on the total price of the fuel
With petrol prices having jumped roughly $1 per litre in recent weeks, the GST component alone is now around 25 cents per litre.
That means approximately another 10 cents per litre in GST revenue purely because the price has gone up.
Broken down into Tasmanian numbers:
Tasmania uses roughly 3 – 3.5 million litres of fuel every single day.
That means government tax revenue from fuel in Tasmania alone works out to be approximately:
Excise (52.6c) + GST (25c)
= 77.6 cents per litre in tax
Multiply that by daily fuel consumption:
$2.3 million – $2.7 million per day in fuel tax from Tasmanians.
Every single day!
Yet the anger is being directed at operators, drivers and small local fuel companies, not the taxes built into every litre.
Another reality most people don’t realise:
Right now, we are also restricted in how much fuel we can lift each day, putting enormous pressure on our drivers and supply teams, who are working incredibly hard to keep fuel moving across the state to prevent sites stocking out.
These are Tasmanian workers doing their absolute best in a global crisis.
A promise from us:
History shows that Tas Petroleum has consistently been a price leader in the Tasmanian market dragging prices down in every region we have entered.
When prices rise, unfortunately we must pass on the wholesale increases given to us.
But when the market falls, Tas Petroleum has always led prices back down and we give Tasmanians our promise that we will do that again.
Before blaming local businesses, ask the real question:
WHO IS REALLY PRICE GOUGING?
Please remember the people working in this industry are your neighbours, your friends and fellow Tasmanians.
They deserve respect, not abuse.
