After four seasons of managing the social media for Custard Apples Australia, I'm stepping back to let another farmer have a turn. It's been great - a real privilege and pleasure to represent the industry this way. I've got a few projects lined up for next year, some related to custard apples, and others that are more along the "painting and possibly teaching art classes to others" type of direction. So, I'll still be around if you feel like a yarn. 💚🌳🌿

It's pruning time in our orchard. Custard apple trees shed their leaves after fruiting, and new branches, leaves and flowers emerge from the leaf nodes. If the trees weren't pruned, it wouldn't take long before they were a straggly mess. After pruning, it only takes a week or so for those new buds to burst out with new leaves and flowers.

As the sun sinks slowly in the west, another harvest has finished and the pruning, fertilising and TLC in the orchard has begun.

Have you seen the reels where people listen to a device that graphs the electrical signals of plants into notes and changes them into music? Soursops are a close relative to custard apples, so they would probably sound similar. Do we WANT to know what custard apple trees sound like? Yes ✔️ Do we NEED to know what custard apple trees sound like?

Nearly ready! This custard apple probably set at the end of February, or early in March. It still has about a week to go before the sugars and flavours reach their peak.

Meanwhile, we'll have a pallet of custard apples going down to All Aussie Farmers at Melbourne Market Epping over the weekend, and then out to the fruit shops of Melbourne from there.

At the start of packing day, Gerard brings trays of washed custard apples into the air-conditioned shed where they stay cool while we pack them. The air-conditioning helps to keep the fruit cool and dry in our warm and humid climate in the Northern Rivers of NSW. This lot will be off to All Aussie Farmers in Melbourne over the weekend, ready for Monday's market at Melbourne Market Epping .

The packing is done, but we haven't counted the tally yet. How many trays do you think there are? When they're tallied and palletised, they'll be heading down to All Aussie Farmers in Melbourne. The pink ones are the premiums, the green are generics, and the blues are bulks. They're all delicious and so good for your health.

We were packing this week, and these boxes had been sitting in a sunny spot for about a month. I think they faded in an interesting way. But enough about the boxes - the custard apples inside them are vibrant, tasty, creamy, fresh and very sweet. And they're off to All Aussie Farmers for Monday's market.

The start of the day, and the big fruit gets packed first. The orchard has woken up from it's winter slumber, and we're back to being busy with the custard apple harvest. The fruit is looking great, and it tastes even better!
