If you're thinking about starting a BBQ comp team... this is for you! Time to have a crack at it!

🚨 GIVEAWAY ALERT 🚨

Thinking about throwing your first brisket into a comp? We've got something for you.

The ABA is giving away up to 5 x Light It Up Starter Packs (thanks to the generosity of some amazing businesses) - things a brand new team needs to roll up to their first sanctioned event ready to go.

Each pack will include a selection of items from the mandatory items checklist in the ABA Rules, plus a few extra goodies to help get you started, think first aid kit, a meat probe, some rubs to get you cooking, and a few other surprises.

Here's the deal:
To enter, you need to tell us a few things via the link below. We'll pick up to 5 teams, and your pack will be waiting for you at your first comp, handed to you by the Head Judge at the team meeting. How good is that?

This giveaway is open to first-time ABA competitors only, teams who have never competed in an ABA sanctioned event.

Rookie Series — the 2027 season is on!!

We've also locked in the guidelines for how the Rookie Series works, so here's what you need to know.

The next Rookie Series runs on the 2027 BBQ season (1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027). To be eligible, your team needs to have competed within the current 2027 season, and your first competition must fall within this season to count (not before). Your best two scores from your rookie season will be used to determine your series standing, so every comp matters.

To qualify as a Rookie Team, your team must be made up of genuinely new cooks to the competition circuit. A Rookie Team cannot be formed by two existing or experienced teams consolidating, or a seasoned cook starting their own team, it has to be fresh faces firing up for the first time. If you're new to the sport and ready to have a crack, this is for you.

Better late than never they say!

Last weekend we headed out to Armidale to compete in at . This is probably the best comp on the calendar! And Mother Nature finally turned up!

Friday, we faired quite well! Placing 6th in Steak and also 2nd in Anything Potato! If you haven't heard about our Potato hand-in... let me know and I'll fix that! 🤣🤣🤣

Saturday was a bit of a mixed bag for us. We heard our name a couple times but bombed a couple times as well. Brisket is still our downfall at this comp and we think we've figured out how to fix it for next year.

We ended up placing;
🐔 10th
🍖 14th
🐖 8th
🐂 17th

Giving us 16th Overall in a very stacked field of teams.

Congrats once again to for GC and for RGC! You guys rocked it last weekend!!!

Also, we'd love to give a big shout out to for the bevvies, Troy and Sam from The Estelle Kramer Hotel for their hospitality and of course Brad, Demi, Jeremy and Tahlia! Without you guys and your team, we wouldn't be having so much fun!!!

We'll be hitting up BBQ Battalion Armidale again this year! One of our favourite comps! If you're looking for a good weekend away... head out to Armidale on the 16th of May, and get to The Big Chill Festival! Some great food, beers and music!!!
