JM Burgers

Bro 1 - Big Boyz

For this review we decided to go back to where the idea first started for our burger reviews: A little place called JM Burgers. The options were good in terms of bacon, however, I had a big appetite and decided that only a Big Boyz would satisfy this hunger. When the stack came out, it looked great, it was nice and high, precariously stacked with all the ingredients gently spilling out over the sides and a special edition, beetroot. Taking a bite, the meat was really good quality, but it lacked a little bit of seasoning and didn't really shine amongst the other ingredients. The bun was well toasted, which ultimately saved it from being below average because the more I devoured this burger, the more the bun was consumed by the sauce and other items. By the time I was approaching the total demolition of this burger, the fillings were all falling out as the bun dissolved quicker than a chef's confidence at the sight of an incoming Broger's review. The extras, however, were great; the egg was delicious; the beetroot and the special sauce added a nice sweetness, and the bacon came through with a really strong, meaty flavour. The lettuce and tomato cut through as well, freshening up this burger and lifting it out of mediocrity into an above average burger.

Bro 2 - The Hamburger

After a short review of the menu, I was pretty easily sold on the hamburger: It was straightforward and to the point. I knew exactly what I was in for and so did the burger. When the burger came out it looked nearly perfect, with a nice shiny bun and oozing in all the right places. I will say that it was on the smaller side, making me wonder if I needed a side of chips or a slightly bigger burger to fill me up, but for this price, it was difficult to complain. The bun had a phenomenal char, one of the best I've come across and had the bread been ever so slightly fluffier, it would have scored top marks. While the meat was high quality and had a decent flavour, it was on the drier side and didn't melt in my mouth the way I like a patty to. The lettuce and tomato were good, but unfortunately this burger lacked the vinegary zing of pickles that I really enjoy. The sauce however, was where this burger really came into it's own: It was so good, I'd buy a separate pot to have as an after dinner snack. Frankly, McDonald's Big Mac sauce could learn a thing or two from this sauce.

CHICH

Bro 1 - Texas

After constant insistence of the quality of these burgers by a friend, we took the plunge and decided to dive into CHICH and their burgers. Seeing the Texas was the only burger with bacon, my choice was made for me and I slipped on the cowboy boots. Upon arrival, I felt somewhat over dressed as the burger didn't wow me, looking rather average with a handful of chips on the side. For the price, I was expecting a larger burger or more chips, but like a good southern gentleman, I chose not to judge a burger by the buns. The buns themselves were exciting and unique, being a Turkish-style bun with a gentle toasting, but sadly fell to pieces over the course of the meal, like my hopes for the rest of the burger. The patty was made of quality meat, but this was at times a little difficult to discern as it was pressed together very densely, like they had slapped it on the grill after they had used it in a hydraulic press video. The cheese and onions were not great stand outs either and were simply swallowed up by the habanero sauce. Finally, the sauce itself provided a gentle warmth, but lacked enough heat to thaw out this burger that was frozen in mediocrity.

Bro 2 - Classic Cheese

As a classic burger kind of guy, the Classic Cheese was an easy choice to settle on. When it came out, it had a very home made look, which matched the aesthetic of the restaurant, but unfortunately lacked the appeal of a well put together burger. The side of chips was a nice addition given the price, but realistically, a double patty would have been expected for $22. The bun was Turkish-style and took me back to my wog roots, like I'm back at home and Nonna is cooking up a storm in the kitchen, so much so that it wouldn't have surprised me if she was in the back of house, running a tight ship like she did at home. Unfortunately, unlike Nonna's wooden spoon that left a burn mark where it hit, the burger lacked any char, despite my desperate search and left me wanting. When I got to the meat, I was right back home again because it had the consistency of a cut sausage that's been fried up: Dense with a great flavour. This was again very wog, but simply too dense for enjoyment. Finally, the cheese, onions and pickles were nice, but let's be honest, the onions are what elevated the extras of this burger to slightly above average. So overall, this burger was somewhat average and lacking any real wow factor, though for a unique and authentic wog flavour, you can't go wrong.

Eggspot

Bro 1 - The Deluxe Cheeseburger (Double Patty)

Upon arrival and a perusal of the menu, there were a number of delicious looking burgers with all the trimmings and of course, the namesake egg, making it an easy decision, after all when in Rome… but we are traditionalists and as Bro 2 put it: “Egg changes the flavour of the burger.” So I opted for the Deluxe Cheeseburger with a double patty because I had worked up a thick boy appetite and was in need of a thick boy feed. Thick boy is the best description I have for the way this burger arrived: Plump, shiny buns either side of two dummy thick patties with cheese oozing down the sides and bacon spilling out for good measure. Frankly, the presentation was near perfect and if it had been stood up on it's own merit, I would have rated it a 5/5. Sadly, the buns had a great cover, but lacked anything particularly special about the taste or texture, once again reminding us of the idiom about judging books. I will say it was soft and spongy though, and set the scene for the patties, which were simply sensational. Infused with mustard and cumin, every bite provided a bitey warmth, igniting my soul and leaving me with a clovey aftertaste, like a hug for my mouth. This was easily a huge stand out and revolutionised the patty game with this spice sensation that takes you on a journey with each bite. The patty was nicely punctuated by the crispy, punchiness of the onion, which added a touch of sweetness and overall warmth along with the chipotle and spices of the patty. The bacon provided the additional meaty, umami flavour that I crave and the pickles refreshed the palate with a final, vinegar hit. Overall, the price for this burger was a little high, but the quality and the revolutionary spiced patties made it worth it because this is an egg-cellent burger.

Bro 2 - The Classic Cheeseburger

Bro 1 said it once and I'll say it again: Egg changes the flavour of the burger, so keeping in line with my reviewing tendencies, I opted for the Classic Cheeseburger. When this burger arrived, I was shook to my core at just how well it presented. It was looking like a snack, oozing in all the right places with a fresh garnish of chives and the plump patty poking its little head out, begging me to take a bite. The price of this burger was definitely pound-for-pound one of the best we've ever had, giving you great bang for your buck. When I took my first bite out of this burger, I was pleasantly surprised by the moistness of the patty despite the thickness. Unfortunately, this along with the quality of the meat (no breadcrumb or gristle), was the only real redeeming feature as I found the patty to be a little bland, despite Bro 1’s complementary description. The bun was also a major let down, the antithesis to the Chimek bun in that it had no char at all, leaving my thirst for the perfect char unquenched. Counter to this, the extras were A1 quality, tasting as if they had just come off the chopping board, straight onto my burger. Each bite was an explosion of flavour, from the vinegar of the pickles to the sweet, peppery taste of the onions, this kept me coming back for more. One note I will make is that chipotle aioli works very well, however if you are chasing a traditional burger flavour, this will not meet your expectations.

Betty's Burgers

Bro 1 - Betty's Deluxe

Betty's Burgers created a sensational environment, feeling like a step back in time to a 1950s American diner and frankly the burgers came out to match: Delicately wrapped in paper on a cardboard tray, it set the scene for a delicious burger deep-dive. Fortunately, the decor wasn't the only thing that had resisted the passage of time, for the burger was almost untouched by shrinkflation, even if it was slightly on the smaller side. It came out looking nice and fresh with the bacon and lettuce poking out the sides, however the first bite revealed a critical flaw: The bun. Like a wet paper towel, it sadly disintegrated with each bite, melting away into the burger and provided as much flavour and texture as said towel. The patty was made of high quality beef, with little-to-no breadcrumb or gristle, but was quite crumbly and lacked moisture or seasoning, giving an amateurish, home-made feel. Overwhelmingly, bacon was the main flavour that outshone the patty and many of the other components, so much so that the “Betty's Special Sauce” was undetectable, as were the pickles. Credit where credit is due, the freshness of the lettuce and tomato cut through and ultimately this burger was above average, proving once and for all that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

Bro 2 - Betty's Double

As Bro 1 already said, the price was very good and was only emphasised by the double patties on my burger, both of which were of commendable size. It had an incredibly appealing first impression, coming in strong with the classic American cheeseburger look to match the theme of the restaurant. The bun was similarly a let down, having been lightly toasted, but lacking that real charcoal char I crave. It was not overly fluffy, slightly oily (for that shiny aesthetic, but cranked up one gear too many) and lacked any real flavour profile, simply providing a barrier between my hands and the rest of the burger. The patty likewise reminded me of a home cooked burger: Lacking moisture or juiciness, but not bone dry either, just lacklustre and crumbly. I will highlight that the meat was of extremely high quality, with only one piece of gristle that I came across. I enjoyed the flavour, but felt the patty could have been a shining star, had it had just a little more flourish. The bacon on this burger was also quite overpowering and almost overwhelmed the burger with its saltiness. Out of the extras on this burger, the mustard was a real stand-out, not only for its rarity on burgers, but it's well rounded flavour and ability to tie all the other components together with a nice little bow.
