Today would've been my Nagyi's (Hungarian for Grandmother) 100th birthday.
I have so many memories of her cooking and not surprisingly desserts; including this - beigli. It's an enriched dough filled with either a walnut or poppy seed paste and it's delicious. It's usually made at Easter or Christmas but it felt right to try to make it today.
It's not the easiest thing to make! The filling has to be not too wet or dry, the dough has to be just the right amount of smooth and elastic, then oven has to be not too hot or cold, pretty much anything can make the dough split!
I've not mastered it yet but determined to keep practising and somehow it always still tastes ok. And icing sugar hides all manner of sin.....
We also tracked down Vienetta (WOW they have shrunk) and a box of After Eight choc dinner mints (not quite red tulip, but still!) which 8 year old me thought was oh so fancy.. and frequently came out as part of desserts and coffee after dinner.
