We are seeing some good looking crops starting to lodge. And they still have a bit to go to finish. This one at Rathscar, Vic had another 25mm of rain on it last night.

Due to cool weather conditions vetch hay will spend a lot of time on the ground which increases chances of infection.

Tedding will speed up the drying process and with Hay Guard get it into a bale sooner

Hay Guard is a fantastic product which we both sell and use on our own hay. When baling we use Hay Guard because it works as an oxygen scavenger to stop mould and yeast growth, keeping hay green, nutritious, and cool, hence help prevent hay stack fires too.

Yesterday Mark and Pete from Hay Guard dropped in to explain the benefits of Hay Guard compared with other products on the market.

A few key differences stood out:

Doesn’t need to be applied across the full windrow, unlike some competing products.
Oxygen scavenging technology, which Hay Guard says provides an advantage over competitors that don’t have this feature.
Fully suspended mix, meaning the product stays mixed and ready to apply. Competing products can settle and separate, which can affect application consistency.

We are definitely sticking with Hay Guard, and we have plenty arriving in the coming week ready for harvest season!

This season many people are dealing with vetch crops that look like this and are looking at what options they might have to get some value out of it. Spraying it out and putting sheep on it is one.
