Living In Mud 🧱 Building our mud brick house
🌎 Turning our waste into biogas
👩‍🌾 Sustainable farming

Our dream is to live self sufficiently on our own land; rearing our own animals for meat and eggs, growing most of our own fruit and vegetables, and turning our waste into biogas to fuel our cooking and heating. We are currently building a a mud brick house, brick by brick, and documenting each day of our journey.

The barn doors are finally up on all the bedrooms!

Kel had to build the steel brackets to hold the hardware for the barn doors, hence why it wasn’t just a matter of “installing the doors”.

They look so good and having the in built mirror on the inside just adds that bit extra to them (although photographing that was really hard and does not do them justice at all 😅)

On Wednesday it was our 14th Wedding Anniversary 🤗

The whole family has been really sick with Influenza B these holidays (it’s been a real shocker, the kids were so sick and for so long!) that we didn’t really get to plan anything however to celebrate we finally bought an actual bed 🙌

After the fires we purchased a basic frame for about $100 and used the old foam mattresses the kids first slept on before they had beds as “headboards” 😆 That lasted us five years - four in the shipping container and one in the house.

We’d been looking for awhile and we finally found a bed that we liked and on Facebook Marketplace no less 😏 It needs a few more personal touches like some photos and way more books (I think of the hundreds of books we used to have 😢) and it will be complete 👌

The hardest decision we had to make in designing the kitchen was the back splash 😂

It took awhile because like most of the build, what we wanted was not conventional nor the current fashion (which makes it so much harder to source unless you’re made of money) however we got there in the end!

We’re extremely happy with the result and it was VERY budget friendly. It really ties the kitchen together. It just needs the final trim around the outside and it’s done 🤗 You’ll also notice that in different lights, it highlights different colours - very cool!

It also meant the range hood could be installed so now we can cook foods like bolognese 😅We will still cook steaks outside on the BBQ though 😏

The dirt hill is officially gone now. It’s all in the tiered garden beds!

The kids have commandeered the area though and dug a dirt pit for themselves 😂 We moved the trampoline (it’s looking a bit worse for wear!), the monkey bars and their mud kitchen over and it’s actually a really great spot because you can watch them through the front window. Kel would really love to build a treehouse and install a sandpit up there as well.

It’s a great little area and they already spend hours up there playing!!

Now that we’re out of the newborn phase, we’re starting to slowly get back into things - not meaning that we didn’t get anything done over the past few months, there’s still a lot that was happening over here 😀 However all the little things that we didn’t have the time or capacity to do, we’re now starting up again (like making food from scratch!)

Kel finished the front tiered garden beds on both sides including the stairs down to the front of the house. He still has to install the drip irrigation system in all of it and there’s a few finishing touches like installing some lights in the two wooden posts.

We really love how it came together - it’s exactly how we envisioned it! Now we just need to w**d and plant the garden beds out!! At the moment we have a giant pumpkin patch over three tiers and lots of grass 😂

We celebrated our first Christmas in the house and it was lovely. We stayed home and just enjoyed a relaxed day with each other 🎄

It was also the very first Christmas for the latest addition to our family…Peter 😍 Hence our lack of posts lately- we’ve been otherwise occupied! We don’t post pictures of our children on social media so a picture of his bed will have to do 😅
