The downside to having proper free range chickens is...they have full free range and their coop which is beautifully setup for egg laying, strangely is not the best place to do so in their eyes.

Our buggy is a common favourite!

Where's the strangest place your chicken has laid an egg?

Yesterday morning I discovered another wild boar at the pig pen. I called Brad from the paddock to bring the gun. He took a shot but the boar was on the run and a fair distance away and he missed.

The question now was would lust win over fear?

That question was answered at about 9pm last night when Brad heard noises coming from the pig paddock and went to investigate with rifle in hand and his fancy new red torch that animals can't see.

Brad managed to sneak up on him and take him out without him realising at all.

That brings the score to Brad 4 Toni 2.

I still maintain that I'm the only one with a 100% strike rate though 😂.

The fact that we have been able to kill so many really shows how crazy the numbers are. The wild pigs are destructive and breed prolifically (as all pigs do) and until the government allows hunters to enter national parks, the problem will persist.

After a rough weekend, it was nice to get out and enjoy some time with the goats.

Parsley and Sampson decided to put on a show.

This may look quite brutal but it's totally normal fir goats and nobody was hurt.

This is actually a good sign as it shows that Parsley is settled in and establishing his place in the herd. As you can see, they are quite evenly matched so there will probably be a fair bit of this until they either decide they are equals or one of them submits.

Black Hawk Down

Sadly, when we got home yesterday, we found Hawk had tried to get up but in the process he had ended up on his side with his head downhill in full sun. This caused him to bloat and overheat.

As soon as we found him, we moved him to shade and propped him up where he couldn't roll over. He drank a fair bit of water and we cooled him down and got some gas out.

He made it through the night but was not in a good way this morning.

The vet said we did everything right but from the sounds of it, there may have been something neurological going on combined with possible pneumonia from laying in the Creek before we found him. He would have come out but he wasn't optimistic that Hawk would recover.

We made the tough decision to end his suffering and he is now resting in peace.

It always feels like a waste when you lose them before their time but it is part of the farming gig.

Morning update on Hawk.

He made it through the night and has a renewed enthusiasm for molasses.

Still not keen on hay but he has clearly had a go at getting up as the blanket was no longer on him and he had moved over.

Hopefully a bit more rest combined with a molasses energy boost will be enough to get him on his feet later today.

I'm cautiously optimistic!

Hawk Update

We've set him up with a nice warm blanket because he doesn't seem ready to go anywhere just yet and we are supposed to get a low of 9 degrees overnight.

He's got some nasty swelling on the left side of his face and his eye is almost closed. Left front leg seems a bit tender and I'm sure he's generally feeling very battered and bruised.

He did have a good drink of water and a little lick of molasses but otherwise isn't too keen on food.

Now we hope he makes it through the night and is feeling much better in the morning.

Never a dull moment #368

Yesterday afternoon we noticed Hawk was missing from the herd.

We looked everywhere and couldn't find him and when it was getting dark, we had to call it and hope that he was ok.

This morning we went looking again and found him lying in the creek out of view. We thought he was dead but saw a flicker of movement so raced down to find him very bloated and groaning and not at all in a good way.

With some heavy lifting, some slings and a buggy winch, we managed to get him up the bank you see at the end of this video.

He perked up a little holding his head up, sitting up and even had a drink of water. He has burped out the bulk of the gas build up and has warmed up after being in the creek all night.

He's still not ready to get up and is understandably very tired.

He's got shade, molasses, water and hay there in case he needs it and now we hope he bounces back after some rest.

Fingers crossed he makes it 🤞

SPRAY FREE MANDARINS

Our mandarin tree has gone beserk this year and we've ended up with more mandarins than I could possibly preserve!

So we have added them as a product to our store and at $5 for a 2Kg bag, they are a bargain.

They aren't all picture perfect (most of us aren't) but what they lack in outer beauty, they make up for in juicy, sweetness.

Fresh picked today by me, these mandarins are perfect for lunch boxes, soccer matches, and as a daily juice to keep up your vitamin C as winter approaches.

Head to https://millstreammeadows.com.au/products/mandarins-2kg-bag to add these along with your beef, pork, lamb, seafood, honey, coffee, sauces, eggs and more.

If you are local to Ravenshoe, and just wanting mandarins, PM us to arrange a pickup.

Very foggy and a cool 12 degrees this morning.

Winter is most definitely on her way with a forecasted low of 9 degrees overnight.

What do you think? Is it time to light the first fire of the season tonight?

No such thing as table manners among pigs - they all seem to chew with their mouths open!

I've definitely seen people who eat like pigs though.
