So this is what happens when people who don't live in the bush fail to familiarise themselves with basic fire safety protocols. They did everything wrong. Lit a bonfire without a permit on a windy day, in a dry grassy paddock with no water on site. Fortunately we were here at the time, and took Smokey, our fire fighting unit, over to help. The CFA finished it off. Could have been so much worse. Please, if you go camping, be safe and think about the people who your behaviour may affect - fortunately we didn't lose our house or our orchard, but that's only because we were home and the wind was blowing the other way.

The bees are loving our sunflowers at the moment. These are a variety from that produce seeds which particularly high in oil, so they're both beautiful and functional 🌻🌻🌻

Pineapple lilies are amazing - beautiful, low maintenance, and really easy to grow. If only they grew pineapples 😭They’re a special plant to us, as they are a feature of the garden at Toolangi Tavern, where we celebrated our engagement and later got married. The pub has sadly closed down, but a bit of it lives on in our pineapple lilies.

It was a terrible spring for curcubit seedlings. Most of our succumbed to the cold and damp, but the Poona Kheera cucumbers made it through. We’ll be saving seed from these champions to plant next year, as they’re real tasty, and they clearly like it here!

Well, the garlic is all in, and it was a bit of a mixed bag. Our French Messidrome, and Artichoke type which isn't supposed to do particularly well here, was our best performer, followed by the Glazed Kayred and French Lautrec, both Turban types. We lost quite a bit to the awful spring weather, but have enough to use as seed to get a decent crop planted next year. We learned a lot too, like to make sure we get all of the blackberry roots out before the garlic goes in 😬

Unfortunately one of the new arrivals in the orchard this year came with pear blister mites. These tiny beasts overwinter in the bud scales of pear trees, and then emerge in spring to suck the juices out of the fresh foliage. They can't really be effectively treated after they've emerged, so it's fortunate that they don't generally have a huge impact on the health of the tree - they just look awful 😕 We'll be treating the affected trees with horticultural oil in early autumn, as the mites move from the leaves into the buds.

Here we are, nearly at the beginning of summer, and many of our apple trees have golfball-sized fruit on them, but Dabinett is just coming into flower. I guess at least won’t we have to worry about losing any blossom to late frost. Dabinett is an old English bittersweet cider apple variety. I’m guessing they’re not an early ripener!
