Day 12 — Blueberries + wrap-up Superfood. Super sprayed.

In 2025 a scientist found thiometon, a chemical prohibited in Australia, in berries on NSW supermarket shelves. The regulator only opened a review after the ABC asked about it.

That's the twelve. Before you go, three things worth keeping:

Washing helps with surface residue, dirt and bacteria. A bicarb soak (12–15 minutes) works better than water. But many of these pesticides are systemic, taken up by the plant and carried into every cell of the fruit. No wash reaches that.

"Organic" on a box means nothing in Australia unless it's certified. A certification mark means an independent auditor has been to the farm, every year, and checked the paperwork.

The rule: certified organic, or leave it on the shelf. If the organic one isn't there this week, buy something off the Clean Fifteen (avocado, pineapple, cabbage, carrots, mushrooms, kiwi, bananas, mango, sweet corn, onions) and come back.

Chips cooked in beef tallow. Yes, really.

Day 11 — Potatoes Ever wonder why supermarket spuds never sprout?

Chlorpropham, a sprout inhibitor, is fogged onto potatoes in storage after harvest. It's the most common residue found on them, and the EU banned it in 2020.

Day 10 — Pears Peeling doesn't get you out of this one.

Many of the chemicals used on pears are systemic: taken up by the tree and carried into the flesh. Samples carrying five or more pesticides have been climbing year on year.

Day 9 — Blackberries New to the list. Straight into the top ten.

Only recently tested, and they averaged more than four different pesticides per sample. Every one of those little drupelets is a crevice a rinse can't reach.

Day 8 — Apples Shiny on the outside. Also on the outside.

Diphenylamine is sprayed on after harvest so apples survive months in cold storage without browning. It was found on about 80% of conventional apples. The EU banned it.

Day 7 — Cherries Short season. Long ingredient list.

A crop worth a fortune for six weeks gets protected like one: sprayed hard against fruit fly and rot, with samples routinely carrying multiple residues.

Certified organic, or skip it. Anticipation makes them taste better anyway.
