Making herbal skincare is a little more involved than popping some petals in a jar… although there’s plenty of that too 🤣

Different plant compounds need different approaches, which is why you’ll find me working with oils, glycerine, water and alcohol. One extraction method can’t do it all.

Then comes my formulation nerd side: how much to use, whether it plays nicely with the other ingredients, and whether the finished formula stays stable.

It’s a lot of fiddly work behind a little jar, but this is the part I love 🤍

Consumers are taught to judge skincare by hero ingredients. But percentages, pH, emulsification, preservation, texture and compatibility matter. Ten fashionable ingredients don’t automatically equal a better formula. I’d rather build something balanced than cram every trending active into one bottle

Same tallow. Very different job!

A tallow balm is anhydrous containing mostly fats, oils and waxes with no water phase. It’s richer, more occlusive and brilliant for sealing everything in.

I love the tallow butter balm for very dry skin, compromised barrier areas, winter skin, lips, around the eyes or as the final step at night.

A tallow creme is an emulsion of water + oils/fats. That water phase means I can formulate with hydrosols, humectants and water soluble herbal extracts alongside tallow.

The result is lighter, easier to spread and actually brings water + lipids to the skin at the same time.

I generally prefer one of my cremes for dehydrated, combination, oily or congestion prone skin, or simply anyone who finds traditional tallow balms too heavy for everyday use.

And for very dry skin? You don’t necessarily have to choose.

Hydrate > tallow creme > a little balm over the top where you need extra protection.

Tallow is an ingredient. The formulation around it completely changes the product.

I make all the extracts at Yinera myself. This is no different for this mushroom of immortality. I use glycerine to gently drawing out its water soluble compounds before it makes its way into Jing Crème.

And it’s not in there because I think it’s some miracle ingredient. It’s one little part of a much bigger formula, alongside Ginseng, Dang Gui, He Shou Wu, tallow, beautiful plant oils + modern actives.

I think that’s what I love most about making skincare myself. I get to take these herbs I’ve worked with for years, extract them in my little lab and actually turn them into something you get to use on your skin.

Pretty cool when you think about it 🥹🍄

A conventional active might be one isolated compound used at a specific concentration.

When I make herbal extracts, I’m extracting a much broader spectrum of the plant. Its naturally occurring phytochemicals exist together rather than reducing the herb down to one hero ingredient.

It’s one of the reasons I still make many of Yinera’s herbal extracts myself 🌼🌸🌺

I didn’t build my business just to build a business.

I built it around the life I wanted my family to have.

My husband and I have worked really hard to create a life where I can be home with our kids, work in the little windows the day gives me, and still be there for mornings like this.

It hasn’t been easy and there have been plenty of seasons where I’ve wondered what on earth I’m doing, but days like these remind me why.

You don’t have to build your life the way everyone else does.

You’re allowed to decide what matters most to you and build around that❤️

The highs. The lows. The things you see and don’t see. Sharing a little with you❤️
4 years ago I started this business from home with handmade products, hand cut labels and absolutely no idea where it would take me.

Looking back at these photos feels so surreal.

There have been so many highs since then, but also so much that no one ever sees behind a small business.

The expenses. The risks. The mistakes. The months you grow and the months you wonder what you’re doing wrong. Pouring money back into the business. Trying things that don’t work. Outgrowing spaces, taking bigger steps and sometimes realising that bigger doesn’t necessarily mean better.

I thought moving into a warehouse was the next sign of growth.

Instead, it taught me a lot about what I actually want my business and my life to look like.

And now, four years later, I’m moving everything back home.

Back to where it started.

My packaging is a lot nicer now 😂and a lot has changed, but I’m still making everything myself, still following the same philosophy and still putting the same care into every batch.

It almost feels like I’ve come full circle.

Except this time I’m coming home with four years of lessons behind me.

Here’s to rebuilding, simplifying and remembering that success doesn’t always have to mean getting bigger 🤍
