Out of the Dark Corner, into the light!

This beloved bestseller got its name from the fact that its winemaker, Casella Wines’ David Joeky, worked on it as a secret passion project. He was convinced that Durif and Shiraz would make a formidable combination, and he was right.

Ripe and rich, it fills the mouth with smooth flavours of blackberry, plum and mocha. From its humble beginnings it has grown into a sensation, winning awards and gathering legions of fans. If you’ve tried it, you’ll know exactly what we mean.

Everybody gets fed up with their jobs sometimes and needs to go blow off steam. Even winemakers. For a group of emerging winemakers toiling away at big winemaking operations, RedHeads was the place to go and shake off the cobwebs.

Often ‘liberating’ grapes from large growers, they set about making the kinds of wines they wanted to drink. Along the way, there was a bit of time to hang around, and play the odd game of pinball.

While the jury is still out on whether they got any better at pinball, it proved a masterstroke for their winemaking, producing beloved drops like this lush Cabernet.

There’s something very fun about breaking out the decanter for a nice bottle of wine, but it won’t always improve the taste.

Decanting just before drinking is great for filtering out sediment in an older bottle, but too much exposure to oxygen will have a similar effect to aging the wine.

For a newer vintage of a big red, for instance, it can help deepen and develop the flavours. But for a bottle that has already been cellared into its prime, or a wine with more delicate flavours, this process can end up dulling the flavours and intensity.
