At the centre of the Newtown house, a new dark bathroom connects intimately with light and nature. Natural slate tiles and wooden details reinterpret the old door and window. A wooden seat in the shower with its own tap makes it more comfortable and versatile.

We removed part of the house to create a new outdoor room and garden, transforming the old brick wall into a seating area (made of brick and wood recycled from the site) as a memory of what was there before. A new large square window and sliding openings that disappear behind a brick wall bring layered direct and indirect natural light deep into the home throughout the day.

The result is a house with less building, more garden, more layered light, and no more damp.

A retired psychiatrist with a love of gardens, wood, large windows and design moved into a dark, damp terrace with very little outdoor space.

We removed part of the house to create a new outdoor room and garden, transforming the old brick wall into a seating area as a memory of what was there before. At the centre of the house, a new intentionally dark bathroom connects intimately with light and nature, while a big square window and large sliding openings that disappear behind a wall bring layered direct and indirect natural light deep into the home throughout the day.

The result is a house with less building, more garden, more layered light, and no more damp.

Vesna Trobec was invited to be a guest tutor at the 2026 International Glenn Murcutt Masterclass with Glenn Murcutt AO, Brit Andresen, Peter Stutchbury and Richard Leplastrier alongside and Ian Martin.

As guest tutors, we shared our own experience of designing in harmony with landscape through gentle interventions, projects that emphasise cultural memory and that demonstrate the power of drawing.

In the last images, Glenn Murcutt is sharing knowledge on designing with curves.

Studio Trobec collaborated with Langzi Chiu, Chris L Smith and Min Dark on the "tataMI house", a super mini house designed for nomadic and mobile futures.

The house is towed by a 'nano' car to whatever space exists within the megalopolis: carparks, footpaths, lanes, medium strips.

It is a lightweight folded and piled rice straw insulated plywood home. It requires a footprint of 5.3m and begins with a floor area of 4.36m when unfolded. The house unfolds to the dimensions of the Kantoma tatami. It unfolds to a maximum floor area of 13.2m.

The design was a finalist in an international Japanese design competition and was written about by Elizabeth Farrelly in the Sydney Morning Herald in "Could tiny houses be the shape of things to come?"
