We’ve surprisingly ended up with two dozen Marans fertile eggs available for tomorrow’s postage from our Blue Copper and Black Copper pens. It must be time for a little breed highlight ✨️
Marans are difficult to look past when building a colourful egg basket. They’re best known for laying large, richly coloured brown eggs, ranging from warm russet through to deep chocolate depending on the hen, her genetics and where she is in her laying cycle.
Marans are generally moderate layers, producing approximately 200 eggs per year.
In our experience, our Marans:
🤎 Mature and begin laying relatively early
🤎 Aren’t prone to broodiness
🤎 Are human friendly and nice to have around
🤎 Make excellent foragers
🤎 Are substantial, hardy and very pretty yard chickens
🤎 Lay some of the most beautiful eggs in the basket
They originated around the port town of Marans in western France. Local farm hens were influenced by birds arriving aboard trading ships and later by breeds including the Langshan. Over time, they were carefully selected for their useful size, appearance and unmistakable dark reddish-brown eggs.
One small but important Marans fact: it’s always written with the S, whether you’re talking about one bird or an entire flock, but it’s pronounced “Maran.”
