🚨 NEW DAPPLED EGG RULE 🚨

If you have previously bought eggs, chicks or pullets from us, haven’t left us a review, and then come back asking for more as they become available…

STRAIGHT TO THE BACK OF THE LINE. 👉

No review? No poultry priority.

Is this an enforceable policy? Probably not.
Am I emotionally committed to it? Absolutely. 😂

Seriously though, your reviews make an enormous difference to our little business. If you’ve hatched, raised or taken home birds from The Dappled Egg, we would genuinely love to hear how they’re going. Photos are also accepted as payment for your outstanding review debt.

And if your profile is locked so nobody can actually see your review…that’s okay too, I suppose. 😒😂

I loaded the incubator like a raccoon on m**h and now look. 😂🐣

Not a single regret.

In fact, the only thing I’ve learned from this experience is that I should probably load it this heavily more often. 😌

So… BABIES! 🥰

We have some gorgeous little ones ready to come home:

Barnevelder, Wyandotte & Araucana
20 gold coins each

And a new Easter Egger cross for us this season 👀
Barnevelder × Araucana
15 gold coins each

Our Barnevelders lay those beautiful big brown speckled eggs, crossed with our blue-egg Araucana lines to produce blue or green egg-laying daughters.

We also decided to put Xena’s eggs in again this season. 🥹 Xena is our Plymouth Rock girl, paired with Diablo, our Gold Laced Wyandotte rooster. Together they give us a sex-linked heritage layer cross, so we have a small number of day-old sexed females available.

They make fantastic backyard layers.
30 gold coins each

WE’VE BEEN HAVING A LITTLE FUN WORKING ON SOMETHING NEW… TASTY CURATED CARTONS! 🥚🍪

We’ve noticed that plenty of people love choosing a mixture of breeds and egg colours rather than a full dozen from one pen—and of course, we’re always happy to create your preferred mix when availability allows.

But if you’d rather choose from the menu, may we tempt you with these? 😏

🤎 BLUE MOCHA — 80 per dozen
Six pure Copper Marans + six pure Araucana eggs

💚 CHOC-MINT — 65 per dozen
Six pure Copper Marans + six green-tinted Easter Egger eggs

🤍 COOKIES & CREAM — 65 per dozen
Six pure Blue/Black Copper Marans + six sex-linked bantam Leghorn eggs

Each curated carton gives you two thoughtfully paired groups, a beautiful contrast of egg colours and the possibility of some wonderfully varied chicks from one hatch.

If you need us, we’ll be in the kitchen whipping up a few more tasty pairings… 👩‍🍳🥚

Available in limited numbers according to what the girls provide. Express Post every Monday or collection from Kelso. Postage is additional.

Send The Dappled Egg a message to order from our little menu or enquire about creating your own combination. 🤎

A little Sunday afternoon temptation for anyone with suspiciously empty incubator space… 🥚😅

The girls have given me far more eggs than I need this week, so I have a beautiful selection of fresh fertile eggs available for last-minute Express Post tomorrow—or pickup from Kelso.

🤎 Blue, Black & Splash Copper Marans — 80 gold coins per dozen
Pure Marans with the potential to hatch blue, black and splash copper chicks.

💙 Pure Araucana — 80 gold coins per dozen
Our current groups are hatching predominantly blue, lavender and splash chicks.

✨ Gold & Blue Laced Wyandotte — 80 gold coins per dozen
With the potential for beautifully patterned Blue Laced Gold and Blue Laced Red chicks.

🪶 Naked Neck & Frizzle Bantam Blue Layers — 60 gold coins per dozen
For anyone who likes their blue-egg layers with a little extra personality—and possibly fewer feathers. 😅

🫒 Olive Eggers — 50 gold coins per dozen
Intentionally paired to produce coloured layers with genuinely pretty plumage, rather than treating appearance as an afterthought.

🌿 Easter Eggers — 50 gold coins per dozen
Also intentionally bred for beautiful plumage colours, with resulting pullets guaranteed to carry coloured-egg genetics.

These eggs are already collected and ready to be carefully packed into purpose-made Eggspress cartons tomorrow morning.

If you’d like to claim a dozen—or save me from setting another completely unnecessary incubator—please message the page with your choice and postcode. 🤎

WE JUST REACHED 1.5K FOLLOWERS! 🥹

There are now 1,500 of you following along with our beautiful birds, breeding plans, exciting hatches—and the occasional bit of poultry chaos.

To celebrate, I’d love to see where some of our Dappled Egg babies have ended up.

If you’ve ever purchased fertile eggs, chicks or grown birds from us, please share a photo in the comments and tell us what you hatched or brought home. Fluffy baby photos, awkward teenage stages, beautiful grown-up birds and first eggs are all very welcome! Have you given them punny names or regal ones?

Thank you for following, commenting, sharing our posts and giving so many of our birds wonderful homes. I still can’t quite believe there are 1,500 of you here. 🥹

Perhaps we’ll have to plan som**hing special when we reach 2K… 👀

For now—show me your Dappled Egg babies! 📸

We will kick things off with a few of our Salmon and Blue Salmon Brahma Girls 😍

What’s blue, gold and has chosen violence?

These three Brahma Broodies.

Pretty girls 🥰 Just don't touch them. Or their eggs. Or look in their general direction.

INCUBATION 101 🐣

Before ordering fertile eggs, make sure you understand your incubator and have everything required for both incubation and hatch day.

🌡️ Don’t rely solely on the incubator display

Purchase an independent thermometer and hygrometer before buying your eggs. Incubator displays can be inaccurate, and even a small difference in temperature can affect development.

Place your independent instruments at egg height, run the incubator empty before setting eggs and allow enough time to check that the readings remain stable.

📖 Follow the instructions for your specific incubator

There is no single setting that suits every machine. Some manufacturers recommend approximately 37.5–37.7°C, while some incubator designs specify temperatures closer to 38°C.

Always begin with the instructions supplied for your exact make and model, then compare the machine’s readings with your independent thermometer and hygrometer. Don’t automatically use settings copied from someone with a completely different incubator.

🔄 Remove the egg turner at lockdown

Chicken eggs should stop turning at approximately day 18 so the chicks can position themselves for hatch.

Remove the automatic turner and transfer the eggs to the proper hatching tray or floor supplied for your incubator. Leaving turning equipment inside can create trapping and injury risks for newly hatched chicks.

The eggs and chicks must sit on a clean, dry, stable hatching surface above the water reservoirs—not on matting placed directly in water. Chicks can become wet, chilled or trapped, and open water creates a drowning risk.

🔦 Candle throughout incubation

We recommend candling chicken eggs at approximately:

• Day 7 — check for early development
• Day 14 — monitor continued development and identify possible quitters
• Day 18 — final check before lockdown

Without checking at different stages, it can be difficult to distinguish an infertile egg from one that began developing and stopped early.

Dark Marans eggs and heavily pigmented shells can be difficult to see through. If you’re uncertain, do not discard the egg based on guesswork—mark it, monitor it and compare again at the next candling.

🐥 Prepare for hatch day before hatch day

Before lockdown, make sure you have:

• the correct hatching tray or floor
• a clean, non-slip surface where required
• water safely contained in the designated reservoirs
• accurate temperature and humidity readings
• ventilation set according to the manufacturer’s instructions
• the turner completely removed or disabled

Fertile eggs can only provide the potential for a chick. Incubator accuracy, temperature, humidity, turning, ventilation and hatch setup all play an important part in what happens next.

Read your manual, prepare your equipment before ordering and never be afraid to ask questions before setting your eggs. A little preparation can prevent an awful lot of heartbreak. 🤎
