I’ve been thinking a lot lately about what actually makes Green Acre Poultry different.
For me, it’s not just the birds. It’s the way I do things.
I’m the person who won’t edit a photo to make my birds or their surroundings look better than they really are. I’d rather wait for the right light, the right moment and take the photo properly, because I want you to see exactly what I see. No AI posters here either!
I’m the person who sits beside the incubator during hatches, takes notes on everything, keeps track of parentage, colours, markings and genetics, and then spends far too many nights researching so I can actually understand what I’m breeding and what I’m selling.
I’m the person who buys the books, asks the awkward questions, talks to other breeders and keeps learning. I’ve had things go wrong too, and I’ve learnt far more from those moments than I ever would have if everything had gone perfectly.
I don’t want my birds living in tiny breeding cages, so I’ve chosen to keep things smaller and work around the birds instead. If flock dynamics aren’t right, I’ll change things. If a beautiful bird isn’t happy here, I’ll rehome it. If the market is flooded, I’ll slow down. I’d rather hatch fewer birds and know they have good homes waiting than breed just for the sake of it.
I’m probably a little ridiculous about care too 😂
I ship in the duckling starter I think is best even when the freight costs more than the feed. I’ve spent a small fortune making enclosures snake-proof. Everyone gets locked up safely at night. Clean water is non-negotiable. And if a bird needs a vet and can be saved, I’ll take it.
But I think some of the things that make me different are actually the really small things.
When you buy birds from me, I want you to feel like they’re already yours before they even leave here.
I’ll send you their day-old baby photos if I have them, so you can see exactly what they looked like when they first hatched.
I’ll send you little photos and videos while you’re waiting to collect them so you can see how they’re growing, what they’re doing and how they’re progressing.
I’ll sit outside with your ducklings, let them swim, handle them and spend time with them so they’re already used to people before they come home to you.
I’ll tell you what I know about their genetics, parentage and history.
And I’ll go out of my way to make collection work around you where I can — even if that means rearranging my own day so I can be home at a time that suits you.
I also don’t just hand you a duckling and say, “Here you go, good luck.” 😂
I’ll give you as much information as you need to look after them properly and answer the questions you have along the way.
No starter crumble yet? I’ll give you some.
No idea where to find a decent little pond without spending a fortune? I’ll tell you where I’d look.
Not sure what they should be eating, when their feed changes, or what they need as they grow? I’ve got information for you.
I want you to leave here feeling confident that you know how to care for them, because I want them looked after just as well in your home as they were in mine.
None of those things make me any extra money. They just take a little more time.
But to me, that’s part of selling animals properly.
I vet the homes my birds go to because I care what happens to them after they leave here, but I also want buying from me to feel easy, friendly and personal. If something goes wrong later, you can message me. I’m not going to judge you. I’ll help where I can.
I want you to know where your birds came from, how they were raised and that they were genuinely loved and cared for before they became yours.
Green Acre Poultry was named after the little green acre I wanted my animals to have — grass, shade, room to forage, hide, wander around and just be birds.
I’m not trying to breed the most birds.
I’m just trying to do right by the ones I have — and make sure that care continues right up until the moment they become yours.
And if you’ve ever bought a duck, duckling or chicken from me, I’d genuinely love for you to comment below and share your experience.
Tell people what the process was like, how your birds are going now, or even just drop a photo of them in the comments. I’d absolutely love to see them too. 🤍
