✨ EKKA 2026 — What an Experience! ✨

We travelled all the way to EKKA with 7 birds across 2 breeds and what an incredible experience it has been for Diamond Valley Poultry! 🐔🏆

We’re absolutely thrilled with our results:
🥇 1st — Dark Barred Cockerel
🥈 2nd- Dark Barred Cockerel
🥇 1st — Dark Barred Pullet
🏆 Champion Dark Barred Plymouth Rock

🥇 1st — Sussex Cockerel
🥉 3rd — Sussex Pullet

But for us, EKKA was about so much more than the results.

It was about stepping outside our comfort zone, meeting new faces, making new friendships and learning from some incredibly experienced poultry breeders. There is always something new to learn in this hobby, and we’ve loved every minute of it.

A huge thank you to Owen Glover and the EKKA team for making us feel so welcome. We truly appreciate the hospitality, the conversations and the opportunity to be part of such a fantastic show. ❤️

We’ve been keeping a little secret… 🤫

This week, Diamond Valley Poultry is packing up the chooks and heading north to EKKA for the 150th Anniversary celebrations! 🎡🐓🎉

Poultry is a community, and some of the best lessons are learnt from standing around a show pen, having a chat, sharing experiences and seeing how other exhibitors do things.

We’re excited to soak up every bit of knowledge, meet plenty of new faces and make some memories along the way. 🐔✨

🥚 The breeding season is officially underway! 🐣
The eggs are finally flowing, the incubators are filling up, and we're excited to say our first chicks have hit the ground!

There's nothing quite like lifting that incubator lid to find a new generation of fluffy, healthy chicks. Every hatch is another step towards preserving and improving the breeds we love.

Now the real work begins—raising strong, healthy youngsters and watching them develop over the coming months. It's an exciting time of year for breeders, with plenty of anticipation for what these little ones might become.

Some wins mean a little more than others.

🏡🥣 Great breeding starts with more than just good genetics.

It's easy to focus on which c**k goes over which hen, but genetics are only one piece of the puzzle.

Your breeders need the right environment to perform at their best.

Fresh, clean water every day.
A quality breeder ration.
Plenty of space to move around.
Dry, well-ventilated housing.
Clean nesting boxes.
Protection from the weather and unnecessary stress.

Healthy birds are far more likely to produce fertile eggs, hatch stronger chicks, and raise the next generation successfully.

There's no magic supplement or secret shortcut that replaces good management. Consistency is what pays off.

As breeding season gets underway, it's worth taking a walk through your breeding pens and asking yourself:✔️ Is the housing clean and dry?✔️ Are feeders and drinkers clean?✔️ Are my birds in the right body condition?✔️ Is there anything I can improve before the chicks start hatching?

The little things often make the biggest difference.

Success isn't built in the show cage. It's built in the breeding pen.

Every mating, every hatch, every decision shapes what stands before the judge.

Not every bird meets your expectations. Not every season goes to plan. The disappointments, the near misses, and the setbacks are often the moments that teach us the most. They make us look harder, think deeper, and come back with an even stronger determination to improve.

Keep breeding with purpose. Keep learning. Keep improving.

The next great bird could already be growing in your brooder.

Tomorrow we kick things off at the Dubbo Poultry Show, where a handful of fresh faces will step into the showroom for the very first time.

And while these youngsters are ready to make their debut... have we saved the best until last? 👀

🥚 How's your egg production going this breeding season? 🥚

Living in the cold climate of Central West NSW, our breeding season starts a little differently to those in warmer parts of the country. During winter, the shorter daylight hours naturally signal to hens that it's time to slow down or stop laying altogether. Hens are heavily influenced by day length, and as the days shorten after daylight saving ends, egg production often drops.

To help bring our girls back into lay, we use artificial lighting through winter to gradually extend their daylight hours. This mimics the longer days of spring and encourages them to start producing eggs while still allowing us to manage their health and condition carefully.

Once the girls are laying consistently, we collect eggs daily and set the incubator every seven days. Every egg is marked with a date and the breeding pair it came from. It might seem like a small job, but accurate record-keeping is one of the most valuable tools in any breeding program.

When hatch day arrives, each breeding pair has its own basket inside the hatcher so there's no chance of chicks from different matings getting mixed up.
Once the chicks are dry and ready to leave the hatcher, the real fun begins! We identify every chick using coloured leg bands and toe punches, allowing us to trace every bird back to its parents. That information becomes invaluable as they grow and we assess which pairings are producing the traits we're aiming for.

A successful breeding program isn't just about putting a rooster over a hen—it's about planning, organisation, and keeping detailed records every step of the way.
