Hello to our loyal Brissy Bee followers.

We know we have been quiet on social media lately, and we feel it is important to explain why.

Since the arrival of Varroa destructor in Australia, beekeeping and honey production have changed dramatically. In many ways, we no longer feel like beekeepers first—we are now constantly managing mites just to keep our colonies alive, healthy and productive.

Varroa was detected in one of our apiaries in November 2025. Over the following two months, we lost around half of our production colonies. This was not because of a lack of preparation, testing, effort or care. We monitored our hives closely, followed the available advice and threw everything we had at trying to protect them.

Unfortunately, the approved synthetic treatments we were advised to use did not deliver the results we needed in our apiaries. Despite extensive monitoring, treatment and intervention, we experienced devastating losses across Coorparoo, Mansfield and Holland Park.

As the situation unfolded, we collected samples from our apiaries and submitted them to the DPI for testing. The results showed that the synthetic treatments were less effective against the mites in our hives than expected. This helped explain why our colonies were collapsing so rapidly despite following the recommended treatment approach.

We followed the research and recommendations available at the time, but what we experienced on the ground did not match the expected outcomes. The learning curve has been steep, emotional and relentless.

Keeping mite numbers low enough while maintaining healthy colonies capable of producing local raw honey is now an ongoing challenge. After our experience with synthetic treatments, we made the decision to use organic treatment options to help save our remaining colonies at Kenmore and Brookfield.

Since December 2025, we have been using oxalic acid treatments with encouraging results. Oxalic acid is a naturally occurring organic compound found in many plants and foods. When used correctly, it can be an effective tool for varroa management and is considered less likely to lead to mite resistance than some other treatment types. It is also comparatively cost-effective—although it remains labour-intensive and must be administered carefully at the correct dosage.

Even with organic treatments, beekeeper safety remains essential. Appropriate PPE, handling procedures and careful application are always required.

We have heard similar stories from backyard beekeepers, small operators and commercial beekeepers, many of whom have experienced losses even greater than ours. European honey bees can no longer be left unmanaged in areas affected by varroa. Untreated colonies will eventually collapse, and feral colonies are expected to be heavily affected.

This will have consequences beyond honey production. Fewer healthy honey bee colonies in the environment means fewer pollinators available for gardens, bushland and agricultural crops. Many food crops depend on managed bees for reliable pollination, and demand for pollination services was already high before varroa arrived. Now, it is even harder for Australian beekeepers to meet that demand.

Beekeeping as we once knew it has changed. Years of experience still matter, but the daily focus has shifted: managing mites is now an essential part of keeping colonies alive. Without treatment and monitoring, varroa will eventually overwhelm a colony.

Despite everything, we are still here. We are still learning, adapting and fighting for our bees every day.

Our local honey stocks are now close to running out, so some of your favourite varieties may not be available for a period of time. We are working hard to rebuild our Coorparoo apiary and establish new apiaries in Gumdale and Oxley, with further locations planned if conditions allow.

To continue offering quality honey while we rebuild, we are also partnering with experienced commercial beekeepers who provide pollination services and produce honey across South-East Queensland and northern New South Wales. This honey remains raw, single-origin and sourced directly from the beekeeper, with the harvest location disclosed. It gives you the opportunity to enjoy new flavour profiles while continuing to support Australian beekeeping.

Varroa is here to stay, and we are looking to the experiences of beekeepers around the world who have managed this pest for decades. There is still much to learn, but the shared goal is clear: to keep healthy bee colonies alive, protect food production and continue working towards better long-term varroa control.

One positive outcome of this difficult situation has been the way it has brought beekeepers together. Backyard beekeepers, small-scale operators and commercial producers are sharing information, comparing results and supporting one another as we work out the best path forward.

That is how we connected with Jeff Wecker from 4152 Honey, a passionate local beekeeper from Carina. Jeff created a Facebook group to help beekeepers share knowledge, compare experiences and better understand how to manage varroa.

We are grateful for Jeff’s energy, determination and willingness to bring beekeepers together around this issue. He has also been advocating to local politicians to raise awareness of the challenges varroa is creating for beekeepers, food production and pollination.

Happy new year!

I've been quiet but defiantly not because I haven't been busy.

Our bees are dieing and it's so sad to see this, we are loosing the battle but must remain hopeful.

I won't go into my own sob story. Just raising some awareness by spreading this post.

As beekeepers we care for a our bees as we understand Thier value to us as humans, but more importantly to the greater environment and food chain.

I'll leave it at that for now.

I recently had the opportunity to assist one of our dedicated VDOs (Varroa Development Officers) with their vital work, educating beekeepers in Queensland about the devastating impact of varroa destructor on European honey bees as we transition to manage this nasty parasite.

This parasite is a silent killer, capable of decimating colonies quickly if left untreated. Surveillance and frequent monitoring as well as, learning effective testing, treatment, and prevention strategies is crucial for bee health and long-term survival.

Unfortunately the government-funded varroa response program is being phased out and will end sometime in February 2026. It's essential for beekeepers to seek help now and take advantage of this help now.

Two very experienced Greek hobby beekeepers were struggling to control varroa on their own, so when I received the call for help, we teamed up together and we empowered them with knowledge and practical skills, giving their bees a fighting chance.

Recently, I had the absolute joy of sharing the magic of bees with a curious young visitor here in Brisbane. 🐝❤️ It was amazing to engage with a child’s exquisite sense of wonder as we explored the world of bees together. We talked about why bees are so important, and she even got to see where our honey comes from!Her bright questions and enthusiasm made the visit unforgettable—not just for her, but for me too.

Moments like these remind me why beekeeping is so special. And her request for a photo to take to show and tell just melted my heart - just look at that smile!

Just did a mite count and found a shocking estimated 150 varroa mites in one of our hives here at the Coorparoo apiary. To put it in perspective, the threshold for treatment is only 8 mites per 300 bees, and our last alcohol wash was already above that at 10-15 mites.

Varroa mites reproduce rapidly, multiplying their population roughly 6-12 times within a few brood cycles (21 days for a brood cycle), if left unchecked, the hive will abscond or succumb to the mites pressures, allowing other pests such as small hive beetle and wax moth to take advantage of the aituation.

These parasites feed on the bees' blood, compromise their immune systems, and spread deadly viruses that weaken and kill the colony.

Sadly, we've already lost two colonies that appeared strong in this same apiary due to varroa infestation. Without treatment, mite populations explode, leading to colony collapse in a matter of months.

This is a direct threat to our local bees and the environment they support.If you keep bees, please monitor closely and treat early — once mite levels hit that threshold, action is critical. Our bees’ survival depends on it.

It's a challenging time for all beekeepers and the future is uncertain with costly treatments and labour costs that need to be implemented and removed accordingly otherwise we risk the mites developing a resistance to the arsenal we have at our disposal.

The last mass poisoning event at this Coorparoo apiary was back in 2020. You can see in that previous Facebook post the heart-breaking sight of a large pile of bees outside multiple hive entrances—this was caused by exposure to Glyphosate (a common herbicide) used for routine w**d control on the adjacent lot. Since then, we’ve worked with the landowners to change their management practices, and thankfully, we had no further incidents like this... until now.

Today, I was called to investigate thousands of distressed bees. While I am not an expert, I consulted with experienced beekeepers who confirmed my suspicion: this is likely another case of poisoning.

Signs of bee poisoning include large numbers of dead bees outside the hive, disoriented and trembling bees, a sudden drop in foraging activity, and bees with their tongues sticking out—as clearly shown in this video (excuse the French).

After consulting with the Department of Primary Industries (DPI), we agreed that the cause is most likely poisoning, not Varroa mite infestation.

This serves as a critical reminder that urban bees are vulnerable to chemicals commonly used around our homes and gardens to control pests like ants, termites, lawn grubs, cockroaches, and spiders. Herbicides like Glyphosate are also a big risk.

How chemicals affect bees:

Overspray: Chemicals can drift onto nearby flowering plants bees rely on, exposing them directly.

Neonicotinoid insecticides: Some insecticides, especially older or broad-spectrum types, are highly toxic to beneficial insects including bees.

Soil contamination: Persistent chemicals can harm underground beneficial organisms and be absorbed by plants, making leaves toxic.

To protect our bees, consider safer alternatives and application best practices:

Choose bee-friendly products.

Apply treatments at times when bees are least active.

Opt for granular instead of spray products.

Avoid spraying flowering plants or water sources.

Protecting our pollinators is vital for the health of our environment and our food supply. Let's all be mindful of how we use chemicals in our gardens and communities.

These bees have just left their parent hive and are on a mission — protecting their queen while searching for the perfect new home.They often cluster on trees or structures, waiting patiently for their scout bees to find a safe spot to start a new colony before moving on.

In urban areas, natural tree hollows are scarce, so swarms sometimes settle in walls or other enclosed spaces near people. That’s when beekeepers get calls to safely relocate them.Catching and relocating swarms takes skill, patience, and time — a service often underestimated but crucial to keeping bees and people safe. After relocation, swarms must be quarantined and nurtured to ensure a healthy, productive hive.
