Today, on World Food Safety Day, we recognise the vital role food safety plays in protecting public health and maintaining consumer confidence.

This year’s theme, “From burden to solutions – safe food everywhere”, highlights the importance of working together to reduce foodborne illness and strengthen food safety systems around the world.

Australia’s non-alcoholic beverage industry is committed to producing safe, high-quality products that meet rigorous food safety standards. From ingredient sourcing and manufacturing to packaging and distribution, food safety is embedded throughout every stage of the supply chain.

Supported by Australia’s strong food regulatory framework, including the work of Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ), our industry works closely with regulators, scientists and food safety experts to uphold the highest standards of food safety and quality.

On World Food Safety Day, we recognise the dedicated people across our industry who help ensure consumers can enjoy their favourite beverages with confidence.

Following the Federal Budget, the Australian Beverages Council CEO Geoff Parker, alongside Head of Corporate Affairs, Lise Sperling and Policy and Advocacy Manager Cameron Dunger, met with Darren Chester today to discuss key priorities for Australia’s beverage industry.

The discussion focused on supporting Australian jobs, strengthening economic sovereignty, and ensuring regional communities remain at the centre of policy decision-making.

Constructive conversations like these are critical as industry and government continue to work through the implications of the regulatory reform agenda.

A great visit to Garage Beverages 🥤

Established in 2011, this proudly Australian owned businesses become a trusted partner in beverage contract packaging supporting brands from concept to launch.

It was fantastic to learn more about the agile approach to manufacturing, commitment to quality and the important role they play in Australia’s beverage industry.

Thanks for the team for the warm welcome!

There’s less sugar in Australian water-based drinks than 28 years ago.

A world-leading analysis by FOODiQ Global showed the sugar content of water-based drinks has halved since 1997, driven by a 31% reduction in the sugar content of carbonated soft drinks.

Between 1997 and 2024, the contribution of sugar from water-based drinks to Australian diets declined by 37% - around 31 fewer teaspoons per person per year on average.

These long-term trends are consistent with national data and reflect sustained, proactive industry action to expand the range of water-based drinks available to consumers and reduce sugar across beverage portfolios.

A great visit to Cooks Soft Drinks in Pittsworth 🥤

We met with Brendan Cavanagh to learn more about this iconic regional business, crafting traditional soft drinks from recipes dating back to the early 1900s.

Still family-owned and operated, Cooks continues to connect people with classic flavours while supporting local venues and retailers across the country.

It’s always inspiring to see regional manufacturers thriving and keeping tradition alive ❤️

From orchard to aisle 🍊

We visited Eastcoast Beverages to see how juice goes from fresh fruit to finished bottle.

As a family-owned business operating since 1965, they pick, squeeze and bottle on the same day, keeping things fresh, fast and efficient.

A great example of the people, process and precision behind Australia’s beverage industry.

South Australia’s Container Deposit Scheme has set the benchmark for recycling in Australia, with more than 11 billion containers returned and counting ♻️

From its launch in 1977 to today, it’s a powerful example of how industry collaboration and community participation can drive real environmental impact.

A proven scheme that continues to deliver for people, the economy, and the planet. 🌏

From recycled plastic to bottled water ♻️

We recently visited Nu Pure Beverages’ Horsley Park facility to see first-hand how innovation and technology are driving sustainable beverage manufacturing.

This is what circularity looks like in action - rPET material remanufactured, filled and packed right here in Australia.

Congratulations to the team at Coca-Cola Europacific Partners on the launch of your second on-site Reverse Vending Machine at Northmead. A great example of extended producer responsibility in action.

It is fantastic to see strong collaboration between industry, government and scheme partners like TOMRA Cleanaway, to improve access and convenience for the local community. Initiatives like this play an important role in strengthening participation and supporting the success of Return and Earn.

Australian Beverages Council CEO, Geoff Parker, was pleased to attend and support this milestone. Well done to everyone involved in bringing it to life.

Australian Bureau of Statistics data reinforces a clear long-term trend: Australians are drinking fewer sugar-sweetened beverages.

The ABS National Nutrition and Physical Activity Survey found that 20.9% of Australians reported consuming a sugar-sweetened beverage in 2023, down from 34.1% in 2011 and 43.2% in 1995.

This data confirms a sustained shift in consumer behaviour.

The non-alcoholic beverage industry is responding to changing preferences, with members offering a broad range of low- and no-sugar varieties to meet evolving demand.
