The Socceroos hold the record for the most gruelling qualification campaign in World Cup history.

To make it to Russia 2018, Australia played 22 matches over two and a half years — travelling roughly 250,000 kilometres across Asia, the Middle East and Central America to secure their spot. For context: that's more than six times around the Earth. Just to get to the tournament.

It took 32 years for the Socceroos to qualify for their second-ever World Cup. In their opening match, they were trailing Japan 1-0 going into the 84th minute - until Tim Cahill struck Australia's first-ever World Cup goal. Two more followed in the dying minutes. Final score: 3-1. Australia's first-ever World Cup victory.
