Well that was quick! Less than 24 hours after the AuctionsPlus sale finished, 120 steers and 120 heifers are loaded and on their way to greener pastures. Big thanks to Jack and the team at Brodie Agencies, and to Corbin from Choyce’s Livestock Transport for being able to take the job at short notice. We saw a little calf all alone under a mimosa tree this morning and upon closer inspection found it’s eyes needed a little TLC. Quick trip back to house for some cleaning and medication and then back out into the paddock, much to the mother’s relief!

Bringing Speckles to Western QLD

Birchmore Commercial Crossbreds is a family owned grazing enterprise operating 65000ac of black soil downs in the Winton district of Central Western QLD.

With 5 generations of beef cattle in their blood, the Birchmore family are committed to the long term sustainability of family grazing enterprises. This means getting the maximum amount of beef available from each beast, which was a motivating factor in their move from a pure Droughtmaster herd into crossbred beef cattle.

The herd consists of a base of high quality Droughtmaster cattle, built up during the past 30 years of operating a Droughtmaster Stud, along with a selection of Speckle Park/Angus and Angus/Wagyu cows. These are joined to full blood Speckle Park bulls sourced from AAA Speckle Park, Blue Spark Speckle Park and Minnamurra Speckle Park studs.

The herd focus is on carcase structure and yield, soundness and fertility, with temperament also playing an important role when choosing bulls and breeders. A stressed or highly strung beast is reflected in the carcase and eating quality so calm and easily worked cattle are essential.
